Buying a bicycle. Expert needed!?

Im thinking about buying a bike, I would like to know when the best time to buy is. I want a good deal and know sales will kick in when summer ends (Now) but don't really know when the best time is.. maybe January?

Secondly, im looking at spending between 350 - 500, fairly flexible as long as I get a good feel about what i'm buying.

I know some about bikes, and their components but am not up to speed on which are the best for the price.

The only speculation I have, it must be hard-tail, with disc brakes. Are hydraulic better than wire?

Some advice if possible please, and good references from where to buy?

With a budget of 300 to 500 anything you buy new is going to have Low end components at best especially from a big box store. If I were you I'd start shopping Craigslist and buy used, you could end up with a better bike for your money with a lot better components. Bike below cost 529.00 Trek 3900
