The book sold on March 13, 2009 and the buyer received it on the 17th. I examined the book before I sold it by doing a flip-through and noticed nothing wrong. Now today, April 2, 2009 he is asking for compensation on the price and saying that there are pages torn out of the book.

He is not being rude or anything, but I am not a very experienced seller and am not sure how to handle this. I'm not opposed to sending a percentage back to him, but how much? I did not see this damage and based on the condition the book was in when I had it, I find it a little hard to believe. Should I ask him to send me pictures?

*Note that I did not actually use the book in a class. I bought it and ended up not using it, so I just looked it over and included what wear and tear I noticed (like the cover and first few pages had a crease on them). I did not see anything wrong inside the book. The pages appeared in very good condition and still had that "smooth" look like the book had not been opened much.

So how should I handle this?
Also, he is only asking for *partial* compensation...but I don't know how much to give because I don't know the extent of the damage.

Since you are an "experienced" seller, you know the only good option is to ASK the customer what they want...

If it is reasonable, give it to them and go on.

If the request is Totally unreasonable, make ONE attempt to negotiate...

If they budge much, take it and go on..

Be apologetic..

ONE part of ONE book can not be worth the negative feedback you will get if you do NOT satisfy the customer even if they are being a jerk..

I have to agree. Ask for the book back, and contact Amazon regarding their policies.
