Buy a Toyota 4Runner with 200k miles?

I’ve always wanted to get a Toyota 4Runner, and now I’m looking to buy a used one on a tight budget. I’m considering a few nice-looking ones in the 96-02 year range with around 200k miles. I know Toyota’s reputation for reliability, but would I be crazy to buy even a Toyota with such high mileage?
 
Yes & No You would have to get a pre inspection. Have a liable mechanic look it over.

My brother has a 2005 toyota 4 runner. My mom has a 2005 RAV4.
I use to own a 1992 toyota camry. We also had a toyota tacoma. My younger brother owns a 2007 toyota Aris.

They are all good engines. My camry (rip) had body work that didn't pass state inspection.
 
The engine on the 1990 4Runner is rated to 290,000 miles. I would assume that the 96-02 would have a similar or higher mileage rating. I ran mine until 311,000 before selling it and it was still going strong.
 
even if it's a toyota......200k miles is a lot. Are they super-reliable? yes, but even then, once you get to a certain point, stuff starts breaking. So are you willing to spend your hard-earned money on something that could go another 100k, or drop dead at 210k? I would look for something lower-budget that was under 100k
 
my father has owned a 2000 4Runner SR5 for the last 6 years or so, got it when it had around 50K miles on it. Since then he has kept up with regular maintenance, and the only additional issue he has had is with his rotors (needed replacing twice in 2 years). Other than that this vehicle has been rock solid, taking abuse from Maine winters, and a 16 year old male learning to drive on it. The truck currently has 230K miles on it, and still looks and runs like it was new. No rust, no body damage, no mechanical issues.

Saying this, most 4Runners with 200K miles on them probably were not maintained as well as my fathers, so it is a guessing game. I would much, much rather buy a 4Runner with 200K miles than a Chevy Blazer with 75K miles.

If it was maintained, most the parts that were going to break, broke all ready. I've seen cars with 60k that weren't maintained breakdown all the time. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if it is clean, have it looked over by a mechanic, he'll let you know.
