I have been having back pain for the past 2 yrs and have seen numerouse chiro's and orthopedic surgeons. I was told by the first RMI results that i have some aging in my L5 Disk so they gave me 3 epiderals; which did not help. I took a yr off doing any activites and pain in back was standable. Then i noticed a tightness, or bad charlie horse in the right buttocks that would not go away. They gave me a pin point shot in the rear to try to get that pain to go away. That failed as well. Recently i went to a new Orthopedic surgreon and have new MRI's dont of my lower back and Hip. I found that i have a labral tear in my hip and aging still in my lower disk. The tightness in hip is killing me more and more and wont go away. They told me that there are not any nerves being penched from the disk. So now im clueless to what is causing the pain in the buttock? Any one else had any of the same issues?

I also have the butt pain butt mine also goes right down my leg as well. Mine is from nerve pain cause by L5-S1 DDD and I am having fusion at that level and a disc replacement at L4-L5 next month. Actually exactly one month from today. I hope yours is not caused by the same thing but I knew mine was that for sure when I had a nerve root block injection at L5-S1 and that was it for sure as they actually stirred it up rather than helping.
Good luck with finding the cause of your problems. Allan

I also have the same pain.. I have a posterior disc protrusion and annular tear at l5-s1... The pain is a severe burning pain thats worse some days than others but always there.. U could have whats called piriformis which is a muscle in the hip that "spasms" and touches your sciatic nerve.. Usually a MRI will b normal if this happens... u can have tests to rule out certain things... GOOD LUCK

Just had a cortizone shot in the hip today. Doc is wanting to narrown down the butt pain by attacking the labral tear first to see if pain in butt disapates. Hope this works and is not a waste of time like the shots in my lower back were. I cant seem to find my MRI results on my lower back so that i could share what they said. Ill keep searching and keep you posted. Thanks for the the input !!

It sounRAB to me like sciatica nerve pain. I am having it right now as I did some yard work today as my mower man came. The pain in the butt comes with to much walking for me. And I also have the knee pain and in my heel and foot near my big toe. But as I have mentioned I am having a fusion at L5-S1 and disc replacement at L4-L5 so I hope the sciatica leaves me. I have had this pain now for about 18months but all up 10 years in the lower back as my L5-S1 is really hacked and has caused me much pain in the centre of my lower back. Obviously mine has deteriorated greatly over the last couple of years even though one Neurosurgeon told me I could do anything and it won't hurt me. Ha so much for that theory. The doctors don't know every thing. sometimes you just have to trust what your body is telling you. If he had listened to me I would have had this fixed before it got to this place. So make sure you voice your own opinion to the specialists as you know your own body sometimes better than they do. Good luck. Allan

Found the older MRI results. "At the L4-5 and L5-S1 disk spaces there are mild disk bulges. Mild degenerative changes are seen involving the facest joints bilaterally. There is mild ligamentum flavum hypertrophy bilaterally. These finding when corabined , do not result in significant central spinal or neural foraminal stenosis. " sounRAB like a bunch of murabo jurabo. I ment to mention that with the butt pain i also have tightness in the back of knee. Did not know if that the same thing that some of you are having?

I get the butt pain and often feel it down into my knee, feel it along the sides of my knee, especially wen going up and down the stairs. Do any of ur butt pain feel kinda like cramps? My feels like my muscles are all knotted and wen I apply pressure to it it has the same kinda feeling a cramp does. N e one experienced that?

If it's not sciatica, then I'd suggest getting an EMG to determine which nerve is being impinged.

I had a L4/L5 Herniation that was pressing down on S1 when I sat down. After a laminectomy at L4/5, I didn't have the pain any more.

Another possibility that may be causing this is the SI joint. Very few spine surgeons know how to diagnose this, so you will need to do some research to find a good surgeon who performs SI joint fusions who can evaluate you to determine if this is your problem.

Best wishes!

HEy clo88 thats exactly the pain i get. Like a cramp all day in your butt. Its about hand distance from waist line. So that cortizone shot in my hip did nothing for the butt pain. So ill be calling doc next week to figure out where the butt pain is originating from. What kid of other test are there that will give me a better idea. I have had the X-ray , which never shows anything, then had MRI as stated above. To me all the signs point to a siatic nerve problems but the last Neurologists i saw said that was not the problem. Now im scratching my head and cant decide who to see for this problem. The last doc i have been to is a orthopedic surgeon.

I'm pleased to hear I'm not the only one, I'm going to see an orthopeadic surgeon in a few weeks, so sounRAB lik ur probs a bit ahead of me and hav tried more things to fix u. Wat brendax1 has sed above is really interesting (thanks brendax1 very helpful to me).. I'd never heard of that b4 but hav just done some research n sounRAB like that cud b where my problem lies. So perhaps cud b the same for u jmassey6? I youtubed a test for it called the faber test, check it out. Do u struggle sitting on the floor? And do u get knee pains goin up and down the stairs? This wud affect the siatic nerve from wat iv gathered if it is si joint problems. Apparently there is an injection which confirms this diagnoses. Check out vid on YouTube 'Low Back Pain - sacroiliac joint pain' (sorry on phone so can't paste it) hope that's of some use.

I also have pain in my butt, i have torn disc at l4-s1, my spine surgeon wants to so a 2 level fusion. UGH. I would think the butt pain would be from your disc.

yes, going up inclines and stairs gives me a bunch of pain. The pain is right behind the knee and back of buttocks. It never radiates past the knee to the foot. I also have trouble sitting, driving, laying down to sleep on my back. Its like a constant pain that never leaves. I know now that i need to get my labral tear in my hip fixed as well as finding the source of the pain in the butt. If its a couple things a would rather go under the knife once. ha

bg- Hope you get a second opinion. Ask about artificial disc replacement before lurabar fusion. I've been fused in my neck, and I have lost some head movement ability. ADR has really come along in the past 10 years. It's worth looking into to make sure you've tried everything before fusion.
