john is an antique dealer and one saturday he put a chair in the window of his shop with a sign which stated "special offer for 600$"

mark happend to notice the chair as he walked past the shop and thought he would like to have it but he was rushing to the airport and away for a trip he wrote to john agreeing to buy the chair for the stated price of 600$. the letter was posted at 11:30 Am

later on the same day frank visited john shop and said he would like the chair but was only willing to pay 500$ for it john replied that he would accept 550 for the chair but frank insisted only willing to pay 500 and left the shop. however on his journey home frank realized that 550 was a good price for the chair and he immediately wrote john a letter agreeing to buy it for that price his letter was posted at 12:30

just before closing time at 5 pm diana came into john shop and she also offered 400 for the chair. this time john agreed to sell the chair at that price and diana promised to return the following money monday with the money.

on the monday morning john received both of the letters from mark and frank before diana could arrive to pay and collect the chair.
