Business Ethics: Why do businesses do this?

A customer canceled their service because of a price increase and decided to get his service from a competitor with lower pricing. Why do businesses send letters in the mail to former customers with special discounted rates after the customer has canceled their service and moved on to a competitor with lower pricing? Why does that business keep calling the former customer, "making an invitation"? Why do they try to "make things right"?
