Bushes look dead - some gardening help, please?

I've been having practically the same problem with four different plants: parts of them are growing, but the rest of them look dead (they're completely bare and don't look like they're going to be growing leaves anytime soon). This is going on with three bushes and my Japanese maple tree. Two of the bushes are mostly growing, with just small sections where there are no leaves. One bush has only a small section where leaves are growing, while the rest of the bush looks dead. The Japanese maple doesn't have any leaves, but it did at the beginning of summer. I can't figure out a common reason for this to be happening. They're all in different areas of my yard. One bush does have some nightshade growing in it, but the maple and one other bush does not. I've tried using fertilizer to help (the stake kind), but that does not seem to have had any effect. Any ideas?

Were you watering them regularly? Most trees and shrubs take a couple of years to establish good roots systems. Beyond that there could be many causes.
