I have had sciatic nerve problems for approx 2 years now and have had pain block shots in my back which only last for about a month to month and a half. My Dr. now would like to burn the nerves in my spine and say that I should be pain free for about 6-9 months and then the nerves will grow back and it will have to be done again. Has anyone had this done or know of anyone that has. As I would really like to know someone that has had this done before I agree to this procedure. Thanks in advance for any information anyone has.

I am 38 and not happy about doing it for the rest of my life, but what can you do?

Hi, I've had the injections on my back and they don't work. I always end up with stronger pain meRAB instead, which I don't like. But if I was you I would get a second oppinion before I have that done.

L-3To S1 fusion w/hardware

Chronic pain patient
Medtronic my stim implant
Drop foot

I normally get it done every 6 months, it helps with the arthritis pain a lot. It works better than the injections.

I just responded on the other post you left on the Pain board and I wanted to make sure you understood that these is for arthritis in the facet joints. They are not nurabing or burning your sciatic nerve. Facet joint arthritis is very painful and so they can burn off the nerve endings but they do grow back. Your relief could be 6-9 months but could also be 3 months...you don't know.

But this will not stop your sciatica. Only the pain you are getting from the arthritis in your facet joints. Your sciatica will remain but some of your pain will be reduced.

Consider a second opinion before going forward.

I've had ablations and they have worked for 6-9 months (in my SI joint and L5). For some people it can reduce the pain level for a longer time.

Ablations are different than injections as no steroiRAB are used.

Thanks Patti for your input, this is why I am trying to find others that have had this done and what their results were.

Does the burning work for you and for how long? I know everyone is different so what works for one might not for another. A second opinion would be good but what all does one have to do to really get one??? go through alot of tests over again??

Thanks for your reply I am hoping that others will reply also, if you do not mind may I ask how old you are? I am 65 and really do not like the idea of having to do this the rest of my life but the injections are only lasting as I said about a month and a half and I do not want to do them the rest of my life either but not sure I am going to have a choice. Was your procedure in and out the same day and do you have any side effects??

For me the SI joint ablation worked for about 9 months, I think I may do it again this Fall. I have a fantastic pain medicine doctor and one of his associates in the practice did the ablation in their adjacent treatment room. My PM and my Orthopedic Spine Surgeon agreed it was a good idea. My prior PM doctor had to do all these off site as he didn't yet have a treatment room/facility on site but was working towarRAB it.

Thank you for your quick reply, all the info I can get will help me in my decision as to whether I go ahead with it.
