He was only 3ft or so under the ground, hence the mobile signal being relatively strong (he did lose it at one or two points though). He didn't have the lighter on throughout the whole film, he used those luminous bar things and a torch too as well as his phone. And presumably his captors left him a phone with enough credit on so that he could make a fuss about his disappearance, creating a fuss was their end game so it wouldn't have made sense for them to leave him a phone with no credit.
As for the snake, it's screenwriting 101 to put your characters in as much peril as possible to keep the storyline interesting. I personally thought that the snake was a highlight.
