Bullets vs. Lasers

Realism in conjunction with violence is the issue here. Firing lasers rather than guns falls pretty squarely into the realm of fantasy - and since such lasers as good as don't exist in real life, the practical effect comes to nil.

I'm not saying it's a good thing, but that's how I think it works.
I wasn't aware that describing sex had ever come up. O_o
See the rationale behind gun control laws. Basically, they're a lot more potentially dangerous, and useful for little else but hurting somebody.
Wow. How'd they get out of that one?

But then again, when kids hit 10 years old they make sex jokes all the time. At least they did when I was a kid. They even made AIDS jokes. South Park hit the mark on one thing. kids are pretty foulmouthed.

And wouldn't lasers.... I dunno... cut through bone without much effort, making them deadlier than bullets?

Like I said, no one outside maybe the government has actually seen anyone wield or utilize a laser as a weapon to injure someone. We've all seen bullets fired, and many have seen it injure or kill someone.

Unless they're stun lasers.

Which is what I don't get... in the 1950's didn't kids watch a lot of Cowboy shows? The ones that are synonymous with Gunplay, including the "Magic Bullet" that kills a hundred "injuns" that miraculously missed the hero with every single arrow?

If the lasers didn't look like guns, I could buy that. But the Star Wars-eque "blasters" we see on cartoons conform to the same basic design as guns. The Transformers (G-1 and Beast Wars) even called their lasers "guns." It gets even more murky when a REALISTIC GUN is shown firing laser beams (like on GI Joe or edited anime). Now what difference does the beam make if the gun looks real? If anything, shows like GI Joe made guns look SAFER because of the wimpy sound effects and minimal damage.

I don't think shows like Gargoyles, Static Shock or Batman TAS would've caused kids to get guns, given that all those shows depicted someone being seriously injured by a firearm.

Oh, sorry. I was just talking about censorship in general. The fact that my 8-YEAR OLD brothers understood JLU's "underwear drawer" reference is a sad sign of the times. I've also heard them say the the Transformer Wheelie is gay and probably wants to kiss Megatron.

I think a lot of that depends on where people are from. I grew up in the country where there's a lot of shooting and hunting and everyone has some kind of gun in their house. Kids get a BB gun around 8-10 years old and a real gun in their mid-to-late teens. It's just redneck culture. Strangley enough, we had almost no violence. The last shooting incedent we had was 15 years ago, where a teen boy shot his romantic rival. Thankfully the victim was wearing a very large Texas Rangers belt buckle which partially stopped the bullet.

When I moved to Norfolk, I was surprised by how people at my University were shocked and apalled by the idea of regular people owning guns. Especially European students. Honestly, I had never even thought about it. Guns just always were around. The irony is that Norfolk is rather violent, shootings happen several times a month (rather than once in 15 years),

That would be the result of bending to fit the rules just enough; the result is a half-baked mix. The results, admittedly, are sometimes silly.
No disagreement here.
I'm actually not disagreeing with you here, either, but didn't you just ask "Why shouldn't they" (emphasis mine) be exposed to all that?
*Snrk*
...is it wrong that I somehow find this entertaining?
