Does this happen a lot that one only has a bulging disc but has enormous nerve pain down to the pelvis and legs? In other worRAB, it is much worse than back pain itself?

Rachel, I'm sorry if I missed this in another thread, but have you had a MRI? If so, what was the impression? If you had a MRI, was it done immediately after your back "went out" or done because of recurrent back pain? Thanks, in advance.

Yes. A lot of times people with severe leg pain don't believe it starts in the back because it seems so odd. In my case, my pain was about 90% in my buttock and outside calf, with very little pain in my back. In a way, this is good news... leg pain is a lot easier to diagnose than back pain. I'm sorry... I'm sure it doesn't feel like good news!

A bulging disc causing mostly leg pain is not uncommon at all. If you haven't already gotten an MRI, try to get one. A fusion may not be necessary if it is only a matter of the disk bulging - that could be taken care of by a microdiscectomy (a relatively minor surgery as back surgeries go), or may even respond to PT. However if you have a scoliosis or a spondylolisthesis or severe DDD you may have to do something more radical - like a laminectomy or even a fusion.

Check out the web and learn all you can about your condition. It makes it a lot easier when you know what's going on. And, of course, ask this board. There's a goldmine of info here and no matter what you're going through there's someone on here who's already been through it.

Good Luck!

Thank both of you!

Yes, I had MRI done 3 times within two years. They all show a budging disc on L4/L5 with no big difference. (It is degenerated, narrower and darker compared to other discs) But I don't have Scoliosis or Spondylolisthesis). And the CT shows there is enough room for nerves to pass through. I also had Myelogram done last year which produces concordance pain during the injection while the discogram didn't. The physiatrist who conducted the discogram suggested IDET regardless of a negative result from discogram. His reasoning is that the annular is torn and the dye was leaking out which decreased the pressure in the disc, therefore causing no pain. The neurosurgeon who recommended the above mensioned physiatrist disagrees with him.

I went out driving around 45 mins last Sunday, the pain was so awful and I end up staying in bed 3 days on end. That nerve pinch pain are extremely sharp and painful. The cotton material I am wearing feels like needles around my pelvis.

Among around most orthopedists and neurosurgeons I have seen before, after examine my MRI films and reports, they figure that my situation is not serious at all. In terms of the pain I have been experiencing for two years long, they showed no concerns partly b/c they have seen too much already.

Have you tried acupuncture?

I too have a bulging disc which caused nerve pain on my right thigh.. It became unbearable. I was seeing a physical therapist.. but it did not seem to stop the sharp, stabbing pain in my leg. My mom suggested acupuncture.
I've been seeing acupuncturist (a friend of mine referred him) and have noticed that it has helped a lot to ease the pain. I am still continuing physical therapy to streghten my back. My physical therapist told me that my pain is radicular.

Thank you Daisy! I tried acupuncture for two months and it didn't help at all. My pain is focused on front, groin and sometimes on the sides of the pelvis. But no buttock.

Hi, i've had disc herniations that have caused tremendous nerve pain without having any pain in my actual back. I did have pain in my buttocks though.
