There is a method that usually people follow while building a stone retaining wall such that terraces of natural stone are laid in courses that is a horizontal row at a time. You should use the largest, widest, longest and flattest stones for the first course of stones and also, you should save some for the final course namely the capstones. These stones should be most stable. While putting them, you should take time and fit them as closely together as possible. While deciding the height of the first and following courses, there are two choices for you. If you choose stones of the same height when laying a particular course, you could get the look of uniform rows. Also you could choose a more random look by playing each course by ear, using filler stones wherever necessary to make up for a difference in heights. If you do not get stones with uniform height, you are left with only one option.

It is advised that you should ensure that the stones run level left to right. If you build a slight backwards slope into the trench’s base, your stones will slope down slightly front to back. Once you have finished this foundation, you may backfill with some of the excavated soil and any stones too small to use for building the retaining wall, and you should tamp it down.
