building a music collection - best artists by genre?

i'm trying to build a huge music collection with the best music from each genre. where can i find a list of the best artists by genre, or can you make recommendations for me?

I would consider genres broadly, like rock, metal, pop, hip hop, rap, reggae, blues, electronica, country, etc.

I'm trying to broaden my interests to more styles of music, so I just need recommendations to get me started.

jason mraz, jimi hendrix, billy joel, modest mouse, jamie cullum, augustana, franz ferdinand, yellowcard, train, tom jones, tony bennet, chet baker, britney spears, rihanna, t-pain, lil wayne, TI, taking back sunday, the strokes, simon and garfunkel,oasis, muse, linkin park, iggy pop, lifehouse, jool's holland, il divo, guns n roses, the fratellis....
 
Rap- Eminem
Definitely. He's the best!

Alternative- Nickelback or Coldplay
I don't really listen to too much of alternative, so...

Electronica / Techno - Darude
Look him up. He's got some good beats, but he's not the best. He's still pretty good, though.

Metal - Power Glove
If you like video games, that is. Power Glove is a metal band that plays video game music.
