Brown dead edges on romaine and butter crunch leaves in garden.?

I am growing romaine and butter crunch lettuces in my garden and some of the leaves have brown dead edges. Mostly on the outer leaves, but some even on the newer inner leaves. What is causing this and how can I fix it?
