Bronchitis...

zeeb,

Guaifenesin with codeine is commonly prescribed for cough.

Guaifenesin is an expectorant which helps to loosen up mucous and will help your congestion.
Codeine is used to quiet a cough, mostly so you can get some sleep if cough is keeping you up at night.

Do not take this stuff except every 6 hours!!

You are over-medicating yourself by taking it more frequently. Only take codeine or codeine mixtures/solutions/syrups as prescribed.

Your doctor thinks your bronchitis is viral and not bacterial, that's why no antibiotic. Antibiotics do not work for viral infections.

However, if you don't start feeling better in a day or 2 report back to your doctor. Sometimes what starts out to be viral can become a secondary bacterial infection in which case an antibiotic would then be in order.

Drink lots of fluids- my pharmacist thinks it works better than guaifenesin!:D:D:D

P.S. Misty's suggestion to take Mucinex tablets is good, except Mucinex IS guaifenesin, and you are already getting that in the cough syrup.

Thank you for your reply. I do feel a little better. I am starting to get my energy back and wanting to eat food. The only thing I cant stand is the cough.

zeeb,

Glad you're beginning to turn the corner. As I said before, the cough is usually the first and LAST to go.
Appetite coming back- good sign!
Hang in there, you'll be fine.
