Brokeback Mountain

I have been hearing from a number of reviews that this is a very good movie directed by Ang Lee based upon a story written by Annie Proulx.

Unfortunately in certain parts of the world and in the media such as Fox news it has been getting unjustified comments not because the movie is directed badly or the actors are awful but due to the subject matter.

The movie is about a love story of two men.

Now I am straight female and I happen to think Ang Lee is a very good director, I have got no problem about going to the cinema to view the movie. I think it is a brave story to tell and many critics have said it could win oscars.

I don't understand the prejudice it has recieved concerning its subject matter.

I've only seen rave reviews of it, VV. I'm looking forward to seeing it :). Unfortunately homophobia is alive and well and warping minRAB all over the place.

I cannot wait to see it. It looks brilliant. :)

I must start a thread about all things American I love, top of the list would be 'Rotten Tomatoes' closely followed by this Hershey's Cookies 'n' Chocolate chocolate bar I am eating. :D

Oh my. I have to admit when i first read this threaRAB title i thought it said "bareback mountain" and then when i read the first post i was even more  Then i re-read the title :D

Just watched the trailer and I'm all goosebumps. I can tell that if I watch it, I will be in flooRAB of tears. I can't believe that America has rated it R or "18"! Over here it is 15. When does it go on general release?

Also, the music is gorgeous

edit - just checked BBC Films and its 30 December.

Rated R is for people 17 and up in America.

PG-13 is 13 and up.

PG- Parent's Have to take you if you are under 13.

G-You can see it alone if you are under 13.

So if it is R, anyone under 17 must be accompanied by an adult whereas NC-17 is 18 and over?

Ours is much simpler:

U = Universal, suitable for all

PG = Parental Guidance, some scene may be unsuitable for children

12A = anyone under 12 must be accompanied by an adult (cinemas only)

12 = 12 and over only (DVRAB only)

15 = 15 and over only

18 = 18 and over only

R18 = 18 and over only (DVRAB from licensed sex shops)

I'm not sure when it's wide released. I know in the States it's only going to initially start in a few cities (LA , NY, San Francisco, Chicago) but perhaps wide(r) release after the New Year. Unfortunately it may be directed straight to the art houses in most cities and not at your local Megaplex. who knows though. I am looking forward to seeing it.

I saw this a little while ago and I have to say it's one of the best films I have seen in years. I'll be shocked if it doesn't get at least one Oscar.

Beautiful to look at, really well acted, really well directed and the love story at the centre of it is a real heart wrenching romance. I wish more 'straight' movie love stories had this much passion.

I have no doubt certain people will have an issue with the fact that it is 2 men who are in love but (I suppose) they're entitled to their views.

Here's the original story New Yorker Archive .
Read it, and you will find a very disturbing commentary on small town America, or England for that matter.
You will also find a pair of obsessed main characters who I soon began to run out of sympathy for.
So, a tawdry little tale that was not particularly well written by a sixty year old lady. And it shows.

I'm afraid you're overwhelmingly in the minority with this opinion.

The original story is one of the most amazingly powerful pieces of work I've ever read and if the film is even half as good it deserves to win a truckload of oscars.

The story is only "amazingly powerful" in so far as a gun is amazingly powerful in the hanRAB of a child.
It is crudely written with little finesse, a blunt instrument that batters our senses around using a buckshot approach, along with mixed metaphores,( ;) ) in an attempt to gain our sympathies. The core subject matter is hard hitting and too little of it is exposed to the readers gaze, perhaps if it were there would be a different reaction to the film.
That said the studio has invoked, a much hyped response amongst all camps, and one wonders if the stories popularity is solely due to it's subject matter, or the chance to see the male leaRAB get their kit off. An appealing sight no doubt, but does it make for an amazingly powerful film?
One can only assume that Hollywood has applied a substantial amount of makeup in order to turn this little tale into some semblance of eye candy.

An accurate description of what goes on, shame it wasn't the title really. :D

Just found this documenary , and it pretty much bears out what I said about lots of Hollywood makeup to make it a `pretty` film. Might add that in turning a 15 minute book into a 2 Hr film there was bound to be a considerable amount of long lingering mountain beauty shots thrown in.
