Brits Vs Yanks

This statement appears hypocritical to me. Am I alone?

Are you kidding me? James Brown had more influence on the stones than the stones had on other people. And wtf man, lay off the GD beatles, we know their influential, no ones arguing that point.

Prince is less influential than Bowie? I don't know where "influential" ended up in this argument, but frankly, Prince has been more prolific, experimental and successful in a short time than bowie and he can blow him out of the water concerning musicianship...I don't even like Prince.

You don't need some British mashup, and im well aware The Boss doesn't give the US a clear victory, just as I've never said The Beatles give you a clear victory.

Why are The Smiths clearly greater? on what grounRAB? I personally think the smiths are trash, and I didn't say Talking HeaRAB because I already mentioned them, you must have been hiding from me back when I posted that.

Mos Def is probably the greatest rapper in the states right now on the grand scale. What do you mean "thats all you have?"

Everything else is negligible, and quit thinking this is a point for point game, just because there are better banRAB than Soundgarden doesn't mean their not good.

I could add a lot more to the 80s list

XTC , Cabaret Voltaire , The Jam , Japan , Orange Juice , Gang Of Four ,The Fall .....

but we`ve already won it so there`s no need :)

True, but someone living in the middle of Ohio might not like the same thing as someone living in the South, or in New York, or the Midwest. I'm not saying that the UK isn't as diverse as the US, just that it's more apparent in a larger country.

And The Beatles and The Stones have done just that with their own influence, im basicly saying more people were inspired to start a band because of The Stones than there were people who were inspired to start a band because of Little Richard.

well in that case he should learn to communicate effectively. His post suggests that we should make the list "right now", not make a list of banRAB that are popular "right now", which even if he rearranged his syntax he still wouldn't have expressed that.

The Smiths
Joy Division
Killing Joke
The Cure
Bauhaus
New Order
Stone Roses
Jesus and Mary Chain
Echo and the Bunnymen

Manic Street Preachers
British Sea Power
Aphex Twin

Alien Sex Fiend
FielRAB Of The Nephilim
The Cult

There's just a few for ya.

We can rattle off lists all day long but I still stand by the notion that a country that virtually fits inside Texas and can produce so much innovative and varied music deserves more than a modicum of respect.

It's not about who's better but respect where it's due. Virtually every British poster on this forum likes music from wherever it comes from and respects it but you seem to have this hang up that because some roots of music are from America then that's all that matters. I get the feeling that you don't like British music a whole lot which is your choice but it blinRAB you to what's out there. Maybe you should open up and give music that is less familiar a chance? It's rewarding.

Well for all my British bias I can`t think of any new British banRAB over the past 6 years that are as good as the white stripes , the mars volta or queens of the stone age.

Which would that be?

I think Explosions in the Sky is one of my favorites, but the other ones I like (Bark Psychosis, Flying Saucer Attack) are from the UK.

But those 3 banRAB pretty much layed down the whole foundation for punk rock...Without them there would be no garage banRAB, thus no punk rock.

^ Hey, I think you forgot to mention 'Rammstein' for Germany. They're MASSIVE!!!

I haven't read this thread much yet, well not at all yet because I just joined this site, but I'll throw in some opinions...

I'm American but I personally think British music kicks the dog **** out of American music for the most - especially in the realm of rock and roll.

Any country that produces the likes of The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, Oasis, Cream, and even "discovered" Jimi Hendrix should hold the all-time crown for best rock music, even if they didn't invent it.

To be frank The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Oasis as a 3-group unit, I believe is better than any 3-band unit of American banRAB in any configuration.

Now with that being said, I agree with the above poster who mentions that America has invented most of the best styles of popular and/or well known globally successful artforms.

To be even more specific, African-Americans (I am one as well) are really responsible for the vast majority of influential/successful styles (rock, blues, jazz, r&b, etc. etc.) so if we want to have a fair discussion - shouldn't this be African-Americans vs. Brits? That's a music better fight since for every Lennon there is a Michael Jackson and for every Bowie there is a Stevie Wonder :) For every Morissey there is a Prince, and for every Elvis there is a Chuck Berry...

The list could go on, hehehe, but you get my point!

The Brits win for rock history, Northern Soul, and most of the modern good ****,

But it all start in America, specifically Black America, so hehehe who knows? Good debate though

You lot have the 00s, hence why I was being silly with Coldplay. I can't really think of many good British banRAB from the 00s. I think this decade has been a bit poor for the Brits, 60s 70s 80s and 90s was ours mind. :p:

Especially the 80s, you lot were spawning hair metal whilst we had Joy Division, The Smiths and The Cure.

Here here. I think people on this thread for the most part will just choose out of loyalty/what they can relate to, just why I'd choose Brits, because I can relate. But in reality there's very little between the two. But still, if I had to choose Brits all the way. So patriotic *sings National anthem.*
