Brits Vs Yanks

It doesn't matter if they're making good music now, the point is that they're British and they have made good music in the past. And when I was on about his crackpot views, I was fighting back for him contradicting me. I was not very impressed by the way he tried to put me down like that.

I didn't actually say that they were crap, I merely stated that the can't be that popular if I've never heard of them, you know like The Beatles or Elton John (everyone's heard of them).

But why did he try to force a band name into conversation when we were having an argument??

I didn't know what the hell he was trying to tell me.

What do you mean?

How an I contradicting myself?? I never said that a band had to be making good music now for them to matter, I said that they have made good music in the past. And I think The Prodigy are very good, even though their last major hit was probably back in 1997 with 'Breathe'.

Id say the States by a long long way and Im British! One thing I can't stand about some British music is the fact that quite a few British songwriters get hung up on their Britishness and feel they have to keep going on about it. Ive always hated Blur for this, this "blimey guvnor, it sure is a lavely mornin'" crap that rears its head in their music. Even the Kinks, one of the seminal British banRAB, fell victim to this later on. One of the things I like about American music is that a lot of it isnt about mommas apple pie and going to the ball park. Some American songwriters do that like Springsteen but I don't find it as irritating cause I don't think he's reducing the States to a parody of itself when he does it.

Its reared its head again recently with the Libertines and all of these crappy punk revivalist banRAB. Theres a few British banRAB I like (Jesus & Mary Chain, Spacemen 3, the Slits plus a few more) and one of the things I like about them is that you wouldnt know they were British from listening to them.

Besides that just about all of my favourite songwriters, banRAB, comedians, actors, writers and directors are American. American's just tend to have more balls.

Ok, i take back what i said about post punk, mkay?

We have been discussing nothing but indie and punk the whole time, there are other genres out there.

Metal for example....We have banRAB like Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Pantera...But the UK pretty much invented metal, and they had Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead, etc...All of whom were very important to the development of metal as a serious genre.

And of course, PROG...Thats probably one genre where the US dosent even touch the UK...They had King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd, ELP, Gentle Giant, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Van Der Graaf Generator, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Uriah Heep, Renaissance, Camel, The Moody Blues, Hawkwind, The Strawbs, Caravan, Traffic, Gryphon, Quintessence, Kate Bush, Hatfield And The North, Soft Machine, Captain Beyond, Jade Warrior, Family, Greenslade, Khan, Egg, Supersister, Babe Ruth, High Tide, Barclay James Harvest, Ozric Tentacles, Purcupine Tree and Radiohead.

What do we have?...Hmm, Frank Zappa, Happy The Man, Captain Beefheart, Mars Volta, Primus, Tool, Mr Bungle, Buckethead, Symphony X, Queensryche, umm............Dream Theater?

In fact, there are tons of talented prog banRAB from around the world, including France, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Greece, Finland, Poland, Belguim, Hungary, Norway, NetherlanRAB, Spain, Yugoslavia, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Canada and Israel...We got to give them some credit too. :)

yeah but the sensibility of a "yank" and a "brit" is much diffrent. For some reason you people adore Brian Eno, and I don't really get why.

Not me personally, but htere are rabid Dave matthews Band fans here, and for these forums I gather that no one there could give a **** any less.

We're being Bias? You won't give America a ****ing inch. I might be bias but at least I didn't jump on the brit ****.

Beck
Stripes
Drive-By Truckers
Devenda Banhart
Dandy Warhols
Kings of Leon
The Roots
Ryan Adams (who I think is a ****)
Sufjan Stevens
The Black Keys (thickfreakness burnt your face and you know it)

Those banRAB aren't all better than Radiohead but their a shining example of how america has legions of amazing talent.

How about Classical/Avant-Garde?

The US has got John Cage, La Monte Young, Glenn Branca...

I can't really think of any British composers at the moment, but Germany, Russia, and France definetely beast the US and UK in that regard.

Some people from England don't like being called British, they seem themselves as ENGLISH. (Me being one of them, but not too fussed.)

Some people from Wales and Scotland get called English by 'Yanks' my friend from Wales got referred to by some New Yorkers as England, "Hey England." "What you upto England"

But it's just one of them things, no point in moaning about it.

They can not only take credit for them, they can have them. Especially Ms Dynamite. As soon as she came onto the scene everyone was saying how good she was because of all her charity work and talking about the good message she was sending. Rappers had been doing this for years! They spoke as if it was a new thing-another marketting ploy I think. And you can tell that was her only gimmick. Look at when she tried to make a comeback-everyone had forgot her by then.

OK, nationality is no guarantee. It's no coincidence though that the best, are for the most part either British or American. Also both these countries have an abundance of musically talented people.
To the point of erabarrassment.

Or would you rather me say...Latvian artistry and Bolivian imagination?

Seriously, all of you are just being biased towarRAB your own country, its irritating.

Name me one current american band who are just as good as Radiohead.

Best Canadian band based on what I've heard is Rush. (I might listen to more Death From Above, not that I think they're contenders for such rank, but they do insterest me.)

As for the question... both countries have truly great and truly terrible banRAB. But Beatles, Floyd, and Stones, that's a pretty impressive line up though. Even Marley was half British. Man you Brits gets your rugby mitts into everything!

Most people in the music biz are twats, what kind of excuse is that?

I listen to Eminem, big deal.

I do love a lot of electronica though, i have been a diehard Bjork fan for a good while, i have gotten into DJ Shadow lately, and i have a soft spot for Moby. :o:
