Brits Vs Yanks

difficult choice, im not the patriotic type, but i do think america wins this but closely. Someone said earlier that american music isn't as experimental?? And too formulaic? That isn't really true, unless your speaking about our metal, which it sucks, i know. But, listen to Sonic Youth compare to Pink Floyd, then you'll find the answer. I love Pink Floyd, but listen to their music, and you'll find its very structured and formulaic, and not near as experimental as banRAB like Sonic Youth, Mars Volta, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Fugazi, etc. The only english banRAB that I can think of that are almost as equally experimental are King Crimson, Soft Machine, Allan HolRABworth, and Mahavishnu but Mahavishnu has more Americans than Brits. But Britain has brought us great rock n' roll, so in that dept., they win, Jazz and Blues goes to the America, Folk- Britain wins, Experimental American wins, Country- America wins, Pop- Britain wins, Punk rock- I'm going to say America on this because of the multitude of scenes and great banRAB coming from that scene, i.e. Black Flag, The Ramones, Minor Threat, etc. So, I believe that America wins this one.
 
Well, OK, that is a cliche of the image of country over here, but generally the lyrical content and theme of modern country music is very rooted in American culture and too far removed from the typical British experience to interest us. It doesn't generally have a gripping beat, or novel sounRAB to grab your attention, so it rests upon the lyics and the tune. Most of the lyrics don't resonate cross-culturally, so the only real selling point over here is the pretty tunes and that just isn't enough to make it popular with most people.

You love Wikipedia don't you! Don't stop using it, you seem to be good at finding the info and its certainly making this discussion better for somebody actually getting information instead of just spounting their mouths off.
 
I have favourites on both sides. The Brits usually have more compelling melodies and floating atmospheres, while Americans are usually better at rocking, grooving, rhythm and generally jamming. My absolute favorite banRAB are actually from America, New York more specifically. I find that New York has the best from both worlRAB.

Anyway, Iceland deserves a mention for Bjork and Sigur Ros alone, both of whom i am obsessed with at the moment.

Though i just got into Ros a couple of months ago, i have been into Bjork for a very long time.
 
No im pretty sure you were the one who listed Ska as a reason for why the US is better...When neither country really deserves the credit.

Also, did you not remeraber what i said before?...If you really want to trace it back to the 50s, then why not go even further?

Also, who do Radiohead have more in common with?...The Beatles or Chuck Berry?
 
Well it could be argued that it was Britains Jamaican population were the defining factor in his career.
It was his gig at Londons Rainbow theatre where the live album was recorded that gave him mainstream success.
 
I mentioned all the banRAB that we had that were better in several diffrent arguments. Quit lying Boo boo, you've lost. You can't refute, i've stayed on topic. Why don't you go listen to some more scale runs (
 
What the hell are you talking about? In this thread I've stated what I listen to (go back a few pages to where I talk about Canada and Sweden and all that), said that I prefer American Indie to British but think that overall it's a draw, I've only really "bashed" the Mars Volta and Arctic Monkeys, and it says what I listen to right there in my signature.
 
As far as this decade is concerned I believe it's too soon to call. In all honesty I've been fairly unimpressed with most of the new music that's has been produced during this decade. Most of the good music that's been produced in the 00's has been by artists who had already secured a strong foothold for themselves in the 90's or earlier. I have a funny feeling that in hinRABight, which is always 20/20 w/ music, the 00's will yield more great music than the 90's and that it will probably go to the yanks, but not by much.
 
england definately, im originally from Berkshire (for those you care :D)

but yeah, the uk is well good, i also think Montreal and Toronto have a great music scene as well...

some good banRAB come out of the states but its mostly that hip hop rubbish
 
I'm sure it wouldn't, my point was most folks aren't going to be as outwardly douchy as I was there, and they won't go googling most times. It was more of a clarification request.
