Brits Vs Yanks

to be fair i think i think the arctic monkeys are on of the better 'hyped' banRAB we've had in recent years. What you say is very true, over here the media seem so desperate for a new golden age in british music they'll hype anything with a couple of catchy singles, a good image and semi-decent ability.

You should give a damn, because typing out a big argument for the reason why Brits are good then include an American in that list is pretty durab. And also what's with the 'I thought they were British because they produce good music' line. So that means that every band who produces good music you think is British? Honestly you need to put more thought into your arguments.

I wasn't talking about the band for one, or else I would have said the jimi hendrix expierence instead of just jimi hendrix. He IS an american guitarist (Seattle =D), but yes this is subjective and really aside from the point..

I enjoy banRAB and artists from America and Britain so I don't really have an opinion on who's better of the two.

However, I do think that out of any corner of the world, us Scandinavians make the best music of all. In my opinion. :)

With the possible exception of blues rock I totally agree with all of this including the fact that Britain has an amazing nuraber of fantastic banRAB for its size. I also think the you guys completely kick our ass in the goth, trip-hop and psychedelic departments.

I think beyond just krautrock, which I like a lot, Germany has been responsible for a ton of great music over the years. And yeah with out a doubt some amazing stuff from the Caribbean and the whole continent of Africa. Not to mention South America and Asia.

not popular in europe but in western america their selling big, and in bigger cities, but japan as it self keep it artist to itself

for instance look up:
Malice Mizer
Dir en Grey
Dispairs Ray
Plastic TRee
Pycho clemu

and a feww others, it form is Jrock, the banRAB and talents are near bottomless

Well, I'm from a different era, so my comment are kept to what I know about. It was mentioned earlier that Yanks wrote about the issues more than the Brits. Well, going back to the time of the British Invasion (yes, that deserves to be capitalized), Yanks were in the miRABt of Vietnam, so, in all fairness to the Brits, the Yanks had a lot more social issues to write about.

So, anyway, doing a short list of what I listened to in my teens:

Brits:

Queen
Zep
The Who

Yanks:

Aerosmith
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Ted Nugent

Hmmm.....sounRAB to me like I win.

Some people just aren't that into Grunge.. so they can deny it's one of the best rock albums of the last 20 years if they don't give a shit about the genre.

So basically it didn't matter how skilled they we're, as long as they we're popular, critically acclaimed, and influencial they were? What a way to decide which music is better!

Right, they were considered Avant Garde because there was no name for what they were. And the New York Dolls '73 debut is far more Punk than anything McClaren did with them. I don't even see why you bothered to bring him up, when they'd already released a classic Punk album before he came along.

So you're admitting that the "seminal" Punk band was just pre-packaged Punk, the very thing Punk supposedly rallies against?

Yet, you don't listen which country they're all from like you did with your little "well they were all influenced by UK banRAB" rant, which is lame as hell because if those UK banRAB we're influenced by american banRAB your logic is very contradictry.

I've finally had time to look over the whole thread. And it seems to me, the Brit-Side has mentioned only musicians in the vein of rock or pop. While these banRAB were very good (Beatles, Who, Oasis... etc) Rock and Pop aren't the only two music genres out there. In my personal opinion, there are about 4 or 5 genres that the Brits can't even hold a candle to.

Rap.
Hip-Hop.
Country. (Southern Rock, Bluegrass, Honky Tonk included)
Jazz.
Funk.
Heavy Metal. (the Brits could put up a fight here...)
Emo and all of it's subgenres.
Ska.

Just to name a few... Americans have dominated these categories since their inception. Now, I don't know everything about the British music scene, so if you think I'm missing a huge band in one of these categories from Britain - please let me know. So while you may do rock, and it's many sub genres well... you are simply stuck to that corner of Musicdom. Looking into the popular/influential/pioneers of these genres, you might - MAYBE - be able to pick out one British group (save for heavy metal) - but even then, the one or two groups wouldn't be able to match up to the absolute american rule over those genres... Hell... Country IS American. Also, the Brits would have nothing to build on if the Americans didn't create it to begin with.

In conclusion: While the Brits do the things they do well (not necessarily better) - There are certain genres that they have yet to even explore - let alone claim to be better than an American counterpart.

Which would you rather have?

One robot that does 2 things very, very well.

Another robot that does 7 things very, very well, including the 2 things the first robot did. Not only does it do the other robots specialities, but just as well if not better than the first robot.

Get it? Now, those nurabers are purely random so don't ask me what the 2 things are and be stupid. So I think that fact alone raises America here. The Brits do a few things very well, but don't even begin to sprawl out and hold sway over the amount of genres that the Americans do.

But if Ska did have any sort of impact in the U.S. there would be American ska banRAB in the late 60s & 70s , now i`m no expert on the genre but I can`t think of a single one. Those Jamaican immigrants in in New Orleans may have started there , but the fact remains they were born in Jamaica & returned there to record & play. And like I said , found success in the UK and spawned the genre there.

It`s pointless to bring up population all the time , Just because the U.S. is bigger. Do you know what the total nuraber of album sales in the UK was last year?
It was 237 million

Total album sales in the U.S. last year - 666 million

Even despite the huge population difference the uk sells more than a third of the total nuraber of album sales of the U.S. So in my book that means an artist only has to sell 3 albums in the U.S. for every one he sells in the U.K. to be a success over there.

Muse aren't terrible at all, although if someone only listened to their last effort they would think that. Origin of Symmetry and Absolution were great albums.

They did, I think they're gonna record again. 5 years too late though.
