your right, british heavy metal is almost dead; steve harris isn't likely to do more than two more maiden albums and priest aren't as youthfull as they once were; john bonhams been dead for 30 years, so theres no chance of a zepplin revival; as for Sabbath; touring yes, albums, a big no-no.

I think british is pretty good atm and American is in decline. All those banRAB like Sound Garden and The Pixies were awesome but now it is getting very bad imo. I still like QOTSA though.

I'm actually quite enjoying British atm.

They may not be new Mondays, Roses, Oasis's and Radios but they are keeping it going...
 
i tend to think britian has the better up-and-coming banRAB at the moment, wer're going through a resurgence. sure the U.S has the stripes, leon, BRMC, strokes, beck, HH, the walkmen etc, but here, damn the new wave is rockin.
 
Please do becuase all three of those exampls are paltry and I wouldn't be caught dead listening to them.

And I was under the impression DT started at Berkley in Boston.
 
at least they're bringing back a bit of the old rock spirit i think, banRAB like Blink 182 and the Darkness are just imitating banRAB such as led zep and the clash, but the strokes for example bring their own style to the genre.
 
Not that nationality matters but I think right now most of the good stuff is on the stateside:

Queens
Stripes
Kings
System
Beck
Volta

I don't know, The Britts to me right now are going back to the dance floor, I've read that dance clubs are just something thats introduced there at an earlier age. So provided thats an accurate statement it makes sense that it would be an influence.

I'd prefer sloppy guitar to robotic synth most days.
 
what could i say that hasn`t already been mentioned ...there`s no shadow of a doubt..when you think about great Rock BanRAB the first three or four BanRAB that`ll come to your mind are Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath..Rolling Stones..and so on..
these 4 banRAB are household names of rock music..and they are british..get my drift?? :D
 
The problem I have with most of these new British rock banRAB is I find a lot of their stuff a bit too samey, It`s nearly all generic guitar rock.

Compare that to say 8-12 years ago when you had the likes of Primal Scream mixing acid house with Stones riRAB , Blur making traditional british guitar pop , Belle & Sebastian influenced by the singer songwriters of the 60s & 70s , Suede updating Ziggy era Bowie & T Rex for the 90s , PJ Harvey doing whatever the hell she wanted and so on & so on.

It just seems whenever I hear a new British band i`ll hear a single that I think is pretty good & then buy the album & find all the songs sound exactly the same. There just doesn`t seem to be the diversity in British rock anymore , everybody wants to be Coldplay or Franz Ferdinand
 
also great on the guitar and piano. great voice and general all round performer with a killer rythmn section to back him up.
 
Lets see. The big three IMO are Purple, Zeppelin, and Sabbath. They were the benchmark for what became heavy metal (although the Sabs are the real pioneers as Zep and Purple were influenced by more diverse styles). But how can you discredit banRAB like Van Halen. EVH revolutionized the way guitar is played like Hendrix (another yank) before him. It's a toss up. But bottom line, it all started with The Beatles.
 
Ok, maybe those examples aren't that great... And I hate to be naive, but I can't think of anymopre examples right now, but... IF you go to Europe like I did, I can say that the radio stations do it better, the record companies do it better... And the fans do it better.
 
Deep Purple sucks compared to 90% of the other classic rock banRAB, I'd take them second to any of the following:

Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, Lynard Skynard, Fleetwood Mac, Doors, Cream, Boston...pretty mcuh anyone. You could have picked any other band and I'd have agreed. And if I want to nit pick, thank Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and leadbelly for those banRAB (yankee)
 
Basing a genre on it's nationality is pretty asenine.

"Who's better, a BLACK rock star or a wHITE rock star?"

Just as asenine as the preceeding statement.
 
The UK says every new band is the "saviour of rock and roll" I don't think they have to work harder than anyone here for anything. It stanRAB to reason that a band accepted in one part of England has a better chance to be accepted in all part where as a band in Chicago is not recieved the same in detroit as they are in New York.

And lets be serious for a moment. You honestly think Green Day got a record deal unfairly? You're making it sound like they got picked up for reasons other than musicallity. I don't agree with that at all. I think they earned their slot.

And to you who said it started with the beatles, how about Dylan, Little Richard, Elivs, MoTown, and Johnny Cash.

The Beatles started as a cover band.
