After a time he became a little tired and slowed down to 10 miles per hour for the rest of the trip. The entire trip of 70 miles took 4 1/2 hours. How far had Bret ridden when he reduced his speed to 10 miles per hour?
1 miles

Rate times Time = Distance
20(T)+10(4.5-T)=70 because T is the time for 20 mph and 4.5-T is for 10 mph.

20T+45-10T=70
10T+45=70
10T=25
T=2.5
4.5-T=4.5-2.5=2

The first answer almost got you there:

>>>>>
Rate times Time = Distance
20(T)+10(4.5-T)=70 because T is the time for 20 mph and 4.5-T is for 10 mph.

20T+45-10T=70
10T+45=70
10T=25
T=2.5
4.5-T=4.5-2.5=2
<<<<<

Here T is the time as 20 mph. So how far he had ridden is:
20T = 20 * 2.5 = 50 miles.
