Eh, I'm not really bothered by the current state of women in animation or anything. Powerpuff Girls, The Mighty B!, Kim Possible, My Little Pony, they all show you can have solid girl character-oriented programming. But it's not like that's what makes it enjoyable anyway.
I'm fine with a writer using a woman as a device (Damsel in distress, sex symbol, confident and strong character) just like I'd be fine if someone used a man as a device (Valiant Hero, dumb klutz, womanizer) because it's really just basics of writing and using formulas writers learned in school.
The hero gets the girl; the girl wants to break out of whatever prison she is in and see the world; the couple cannot date because the families are rivals -- just common, fall back formulas for writers to use to help make their story work.
Besides, just because we don't have a large amount of mainly-girl shows or girl directors doesn't mean we don't have really funny, entertaining, overall solid female characters. Just to list a few, characters like Dory (Finding Nemo), Sam (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs), Bessie Higgenbottom (Mighty B!), DeeDee (Dexter's Lab), Lilo (Lilo & Stitch) are very entertaining to watch. I don't think because they weren't made by a female director or were in a show with a mostly female cast that it changes the fact that they're good girl characters.
