Breaking the Mold: Why I Learned to Like G Gundam

Yes, but from what I understand it's more silly than it is a radical departure from what came before. You still have your Newtype youth and his frienRAB voyaging on a ship, and so on. It also was not a game changer. On the contrary, things got more serious again after ZZ (thankfully), and it was starting with G that Gundam started getting reimagined with dramatic differences and ideas.

ZZ reminRAB me of Transformers Victory and Transformers Masterforce. Powerful transforming robots in the hanRAB of oh so very 80s multi-cultural kiRAB.

This is the most I've watched of a Gundam series. Wacky transformation sequences and Master Asia's crazy antics are my cup of tea anyways. I didn't finish it though, stopping about the time Allenby showed up.

I did see a clip of the very end, and I heard Gurren Lagann
used it as inspiration for its finale.

Allenby was one of the main reasons I watched the show. I even skipped ahead to episode 30 early on, which was kind of weird when I had to go back and carry on (especially in the face of my near-religious ceremony for watching 00 episodes). She's clearly based on Four from Zeta, but she's one of the few 'clones' in Gundam who can stand by themselves just fine. I like that although she has a tragic backstory, she's a fairly lively and intelligent character. "Blah blah blah- shut up, old man!" has to be one of my favourite moments in the series

I'm pretty sure also if you ask some of the 'old timers' in the fanbase, there are still certain legenRAB about me...*slips on sunglasses and munches Pocky*

You know who this guy's voice reminRAB me of?

"We're under attack by mobile suits made by Gundamanium alloy from outer space...SO WHAT DOES THE SCOUTER SAY ABOUT THEIR POWER LEVEL?!"

How did I not remeraber this?

Oh, I must have blocked it out...

Truthfully, I like Heero's new voice in DWG2. Much better, emotionally speaking.

I still don't remeraber why Heero and R

Yeah, I always had a problem with their relationship and while I knew that Relena had grown devoted to Heero (Though I'm not exactly sure why) I couldn't figure out at what point did Heero start liking Relena. Really, I find the relationship more like "Because the plot needed them to"

Then again, I saw Wing after G and SEED where the relationships did grow and I never really questioned it. (Destiny on the other hand...)

It's more like a bodyguard admiration than love, I'd say.

And can you blame her? Besides Heero, Duo's the only other hetero guy and he's taken. Zechs is her brother, Trowa's got incest, Quatre's gay, and everyone else is an old fart.

I never really thought of it as love per se but more of a plutonic relationship in which Heero grew to cared and respect Relena for her ideals, determination and the integrity of her character.

The chick from Victory? Aw, she's not that bad.....okay yes she is (God, it's just now hitting me that every series has some uber-crazy girl)

I think Zeta set that precent, though. I can't recall any really nutty girls in MSG.

Unless you want to count the original appearence of Kusko Al...

Bah, curse my 2003 arrival. I seem to have missed out on "Absolutely Allenby."

*ahem* Ah well.

Allenby was good. It was nice to have a regular who didn't have a Shuffle Crest. I never quite thought of her as taking after Four, possibly because she wasn't unlikable. I may change my mind when I see it again, though.

I still dislike Nobel Gundam, though. I mean, really, Sailor Moon? I prefer Rain's Rising Gundam. I think it's basically because I'm generally not a fan of so-called "lady robots" (Mazinger, I'm looking at you). Good designs, to me, walk this narrow line between fantasy and plausability. It's tough to do that when you have Nobel with a head of hair or certain MS in other series getting colored pink.

Good character, though. Also a perfect rival for Rain, who battles every now and then but doesn't even begin to live for the fight like the others do.

That's actually a really good summary, although I'd add that by the very end there seemed to be some hints of romantic tension (that "this is the only thing that I can do for you" line is pretty telling). Blind Target takes it up another notch, if one happens to accept it of course.

I see some interesting comparison and contrast to the Setsuna/Marina link in Gundam 00 that would come much later...the pairings are different in crucial ways, and both may not be real pairings in the normal sense at all for that matter. At the least, it may be that on the part of Heero and Setsuna they both see certain qualities in the woman that they want to protect...in part because they care for the person and in part because the principle(s) in question are something they want but can't live up to in their own lives, at least not at the time of their animated adventures.

Ah, but this is a G thread. Fortunately for Domon, he has it a bit easier. He doesn't really wrestle with who he is and what he wants. He acts on his emotions fairly often, it seems. See "take this! My love, my anger, and all my sorrow!" and "you heartless villain!" Etc, etc. He's got his issues but at least his childhood wasn't screwed up at a tender young age, as near as I can recall.
