Why not address them both head-on? If the debt ceiling is simply raised, the temptation will be to just continue kicking the can down the road and not change anything.

Spending has increased by a trillion dollars, more than one-third of the budget, in five years. No, it's not a spending problem

Curious how you compare the US to the UK and Germany, and not to itself, where federal revenues have been stable at 17-20% of GDP every year for decades. Nor do I know where you got the 15% nuraber, as I'm pretty sure it is more like 18 or 19% right now.

Well maybe you should ask why Senate Democrats and Obama seem so committed to defeating any proposal that addresses the issue -- first the Ryan plan, now the Boehner plan, which is so not-extreme that many conservatives want to boycott it.

Meanwhile, Obama has put forward nothing with any details, and nobody has seen Reid's vaunted proposal. It's almost as though they aren't even interested in anything besides the status quo: keep raising the debt limit, keep spending, pretend it makes no difference.

Uhh... no.

Defeating retarded proposals != "defeating any proposal"

Obama is a complete incompetent with ZERO clue on how the private sector works. His leadership on the debt crisis has been shameful. The GOP is only looking to cut pennies on the $$ from spending, they are woefully inadequate themselves, but Obama and his cronies are pathetic

Then I will amend that to an indisputably true statement: Democrats and Obama have been committed to defeating every proposal that has been made to address the issue.

Obama claims to have a plan, but from all the evidence does not; Reid may have one, but it hasn't been seen by anybody. The only two plans actually put on the table so far are Ryan's and Boehner's.

It's really easy to stand on the sidelines and snipe at others' ideas but not put in your own, and that game is usually played by people who aren't really interested in the problem to begin with.

I guess you forgot the truly bi-partisan, gang of six plan, which Obama and Democrats both said they'll support. Or Obama's original plan which cantor balked on (which pissed off Boehner according to off the record, insider remarks).

Not to mention, apparently the republican plan is so terrible that Boehner can't even convince the tea party to accept his deal

In fact, Obama has recently offered what the republican had originally proposed when negotiation first started. Yet, the republicans won't accept it

He's essentially governed as a Republican, why the derps hate him so much, I'll never understand.
