Break in- What do they actually do?

Hey guys. Thanks for the help on my last post. Very helpful. I have another one if you guys don't mind. I'm about to take my bike in for the break-in servicing. What do they actually do? Do they just change the oil and flush the metal shavings out? I know how to do that and inspect everything. So is it actually worth me paying $250? Thanks in advance for your responses!

Aside from changing the oil and checking fasteners, the most critical task is the valve check. Occasionally, a valve will seat further and get tight to the point that it doesn't fully close when at NOT. Over time this can result in metal damage.

This service isn't rocket surgery, and I highly recommend that anyone with moderate tools skills do it themselves. Dealers are notoriously inept and careless with our machines.

Mikal,

For $250, they should be doing EVERYTHING listed in your manual's chart for the 600 mile service. Nothing more, nothing less.

If you take it to a mechanic/dealer to get this done, make sure they're doing the valve check or $250 is WAY TO EXPENSIVE.

Yup. One good way to check is to put a dab of RTV across the valve-cover to head seam in an inconspicuous place and see if it's broken later. Or just do it yourself.

Did my own 600 mile maintance and only had the recall done on my bike and tire's installed on mine always did own oil and such and checked bolt, nuts and such myself. Never had a problem with bike and saved tons of money.

Thanks guys. I like the idea about putting a little RTV on the valve cover. I guess I'm just going to bite the bullet on this one. At least after this one is done, I can start doing it myself.

I signed up for a program that includes unlimited oil and filter changes and all scheduled maintenance for the next 3 years (2 services a year). It cost me $1099.

I hope to get my moneys worth out of them!
