I'm not sure about Sarah making a "noble self-sacrifice" by ending the relationship. Apparently she already knew Gavin. It's maybe a part of the mystery to be solved next week.
Aside that fact, I think the smile was just that, a smile, knowing that her husband would have loved the gift, not that she was hoping he would jump from it.
The thing that bugged me was when she said to the son 'it's your father's birthday.' Surely, he would have known that, every kid knows when their parent#s birthdays are, especially older ones!
I was only 11 when the original series was aired and, needless to say, the only topic of discussion at school the next day was the sex scenes! (which if I recall correctly were much more graphic than today's and with hindsight I'm amazed my parents let me watch it! Much more liberal in the 70's maybe?). Therefore I don't actually remember much of the original plot but what you've described above sounds a damn sight more interesting than what they've created with the new version. Talk about being diluted and losing it's teeth! No wonder the original was apparently so good psychologically, it actually shocked people. The only thing shocking in this new version was the lack of chemistry between all the main players!
We seem to have lost courage over the years and regretfully everything has to fit into some kind of PC mould. Shame really. If this programme had followed the lines of the original it could have been really good instead of just OK (IMO).
I'll continue to watch though and hope it improves a bit.
That's what I was wondering too. Is she actually married to her half brother!
I thought it was ok and the two leads Eve and Norris really good but i agree with you in that everyone should reserve judgement till the last episode !
Yeah I feel exactly the same, I think it's possibly just people who've seen the original because I find remakes never match up to the original. But personally I think it's excellent and the best one off drama on ITV in ages...
The one charactor i found bad was Sarah the mistress !...im sorry but the part was so badly acted it was untrue ..she seemed to the writers and director a fleeting romance for peter and the scene where she said she wanted their affair to end was so unbeleiveable and badly directed !
She wanted " ...to live like common people, sleep with common people, do what common people do ..."? [Pulp 1985]
I saw the original which I found dark, brooding and compulsive viewing.
This remake has many elements of a spoof drama particularly those close-ups of Daddy and daughter eating and slurping food, gazing into each other's eyes and the accompanying sound effects. Cringe factor 25. I'll still watch the rest of the series though
Its what I feared and that's why I haven't watched it. I may take a look if it's repeated in the future. Television today especially where sex is concerned is far more prudish . They seem far more comfortable today showing all kinds of violence which I detest.
Like you I will order my copy of the real BOBW i.e the original production.
Indeed. They are not getting across the sense that Prue is enjoying being the centre of attention and playing the two men in her life off against each other. Maybe it will become more obvious later? I
Can someone tell me if Pru in the original series looked a complete shambles - and like she'd been playing 'dress up' in a collection of hideous items from a charity shop?
I am going to watch my mum's boxed set of the two, which she got about 6 years ago for twenty quid off Amazon. Nothing like cashing in now off the back of the remake is there?
