Yep, definitely sounds like something related to the kick stand switch. I has a similar problem with my '79 Yamaha XS1100. It had a couple of wrapped wires that sometimes when I'd wash it, even though I knew of the problem and would try to avoid direct water on those specific wrapped wires, it would still get enough moisture inside the wrapping to keep it from starting. After a few hours of drying it would crank up without a problem.
