bought auction car from person off Craigslist?

My BF just bought an 86 Volvo for me but I cant drive a stick...
so we are trying to sell it.

But the guy he bought it from said it was an auction car and gave him a certificate of possessory lien foreclosure instead of a title.

I dont trust that my BF knew what he was doing...how do we know the car wasnt stolen? My BF didnt ask for ID to verify the name on the papers. And I found drug paraphanalia in the trunk...

What if when we go to the DMV, we find out it was stolen? Is it unlikely that it was stolen because the lien papers show that it was bought at an auction 14 days ago...is this weird or do people sell cars with auction papers all the time?
 
scam all over it. also,auctions put the vehicle in your name right away. personally,i would get the vin# from the car or the registration be sure it matches up. go to carfax.co $29.95 and see whats up with that car. and still bother you. go to DVM and do a title search on that car. and tell them your story. most likely . you got scammed
