I'm reminded of that hilarious animated skit on Saturday Night Live a few years back with Mickey taking a pair of kids on a visit to the "Disney Vault", and at one point, one of the kids remarks "You're supposed to be funny?"
Let's face it...Mickey is more of a corporate symbol these days than a viable character in his own right. I'd argue the character hasn't been genuinely entertaining since the B&W "Steamboat Willie" days, when he at least had a spark of personality.
Squidward Tennicals (Later Spongebob episodes)-for some reason, Squidward is starting to get annoying after the 2008 episodes. They should re-design him as an echinda with squid arms, 2 pairs of feet, have Tiny Tiger's personallity (as seen in the PS1 Crash games), calls himself by the third person, & be voice by Lee Tockar. That will make him a better character.
Samy (Jimmy Two-Shoes)-My least favorite character in the entire series. He's dosn't even think how Jimmy feels after treating him badly.
Peppermint Larry & Doctor Barber (Season 2 Flapjack)-for some reason they're becomming duller & duller. For one thing, Peppermint Larry is becoming more of a Mr. High-Pants want-a-be & Dr. Barber always after Flap & K'nuckles.
I don't think she was meant to be an interesting character. You notice she didn't last long.
There was one funny aspect about her though. I always found it humorous that the kids never got the meaning of her name. "Mrs Choksondik? More like, 'Mrs. Makes Me Sick'!"
True, but since probably 90% of all main characters in cartoons back in those days could be described more or less in the same way (in other words, as knock-offs of Felix the Cat, who in turn was a knock-off of Charlie Chaplins screen personailty), Mickey hardly stood out as a character even back then. What made Mickey popular was the gags, emotion, use of sound and splendid animation in his films, not his personality.
You are not the only one that thinks that. I actually thought I was the only person here thinking like that since I've seen a lot of support for Naruto's character. And to be honest with you, I don't consider Gaara as a main character. I consider him to be more of a secondary character much like Kakashi (the only one from the leaf that I find enjoyable). But yeah, for the most part I think the best/interesting characters are the Akatsuki members along with Orochimaru (and characters who're not apart of the leaf village).
Thank you. What so many people consider "boring" in Mickey - his sincerity, his "little guy" mentality" - actually stood him apart from the crowd when they first showed up back in the day.
(Don't get me started on the animal-abusing, rapist Mickey of the really early shorts :anime
Perhaps, but the problem is that it's hard to make 'sincere little guy' characters funny. Often they can't be put into tricks, tempers and jokes because they usually have to set a good example by doing the right thing.
Maybe in order for Mickey to work as a comedic character, Disney needs to find a happy medium between the 2 extremes: the plucky rebel and the little hero.
Another factor who could add to the reason why people consider "boring" in Mickey, when a new character who arrive and wasn't originally became a permanent character because he "stoled the show" like Donald Duck. And to a latter extent there a similar situation in The Adventures of Tintin, Tintin was sincere, helping peoples in need and when Captain Haddock entered the scene by the little door, he begin to stole the show.
Glad to see it. Seriously, when the only really interesting characters are villains, it's kind of annoying to see them go. I mean, yeah, you know villains have to die, but it's hard not to be annoyed when they're the only guys who really engage you.
What annoys me more, though, is how their defeats just feel so cheap. I mean, these are the toughest guys around - and youths in their early teens are defeating them.
I guess I consider Gaara one of the "main" cast because he's had more interaction with the main characters. I also find Kakashi interesting as a character, but that's...it. Again, the rest, in my humble opinion, are boring to badly written.
Pretty much all the main Simpsons cast has gotten pretty boring in the more recent seasons, if you ask me. I've rarely laughed at Bart's pranks since after season 11.
Very true. Floyd Gottfredson found a sort of balance like that in the Mickey Mouse comics he wrote - Mickey is still short and friendly, but there's a definite scrappiness about him that's completely lacking from Mickey's screen persona. (You probably already knew that, Silverstar, but it is my personal philosophy that Gottfredson needs to be plugged in every discussion of Mickeys character. :anime
I think Mickey's on-screen persona has more merit then people give him credit for, though - yeah, sometimes he's boring, but more often than not I've seen humor stem from the fact that such an "everyman" character is so often being thrust into chaotic and unpredictable situations. I think the stink him being boring comes more from - 1. The fact that Disney utilizes him so poorly, and 2. The fact that he is constantly being sat beside characters like Donald and Goofy - the any actual character flaws.
But that's just me, though. And I also think his rendition in Epic Mickey looks mighty annoying, so whatdoiknowanyway...
By "mid seasons" Stewie, I hope you mean Seasons 3-4 (where "Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story" came from,) since I like him best there too. He could be evil, but not stereotypically so, and he could be effeminate, but not flamboyantly so. It was a good balance.
Nowadays, Stewie is just as bad as he was in his early days, only a 2-dimensional homosexual character rather than a 2-dimensional villainous one. It's not a personality; it's an excuse for unfunny gay jokes. A recent episode had him crossdressing and speaking in a high-pitched voice. Yeah, how funny...except that he's done that like, a MILLION TIMES already in the past. Please, Family Guy staff, do something new with him and make him interesting again!
Agreed. Another good thing about mid-season Stewie was his childishness. Sure, he was still very intelligent, but also hopelessly naive and immature. By contrast, the early, diabolic mastermind Stewie and the current flamboyantly gay Stewie seem way too "adult" for my liking. Stewie's a smart kid, but he's still a freaking kid, damn it!
Bottom line: Season 1 and early Season 2 Stewie was too focused on being evil and not funny enough. He then got balanced out and became a very funny and interesting character. But around late Season 5, the writers went and ruined it, and now he's just an stereotypical gay man in a baby's body which, like his early self, just isn't very funny.
I don't know if spoilers are allowed here untagged, so I'll be nice & considerate, especially since this series is quite new
"Rokujo Miharu" from "Nabari no Ou": At least in the manga he fights back and does some tricks, in animation he's just a wimp being the "damsel in Distress" most of the time, and after he befriended Yoite he was depending on him almost every time to be rescued
Yoite is too annoying with the "I don't want to die, go to my past and erase me", good grief
Gao is too fond of "Shimizu Raiku"
The main villain with the "I want to save the world by being a villain attitude", he does nothing before the series reach episode 24
"Homer Simpson" when he drinks, defends bear, rubs his seating, burps, shows without topping, unfairly hates his neighbor.......
"Lisa Simpson" with being a vegetarian and hates the monstrosity against poor animals. How about monstrosity against poor plants? What's with removing fruits from their breeding place so they die or be eating like they aren't living creatures
"Bart Simpson" when he shows his bottom or stir it
-----------------------------------------------------
"Uchiha Sasuke" in both incarnations is annoying now, way too annoying
Gaara was plain annoying before Naruto knocks sense into him, so was "Hyuga Neji", but they turned awesome later on
------------------------------------------------------
"Mole Man" in "Superhero Squad" when he breaks wind
Hulk eats everything
"Miss Marvel" being just one to order and complain, I'm not a fan of "Carol Danvers", but they really ruined her here
----------------------------------------------------
"Sally Avril" in "Spectacular Spider-Man", except when she was concerned about Pete's safety. She's much nicer in "Untold Tales of Spider-Man" comics
------------------------------------------------------
"Anna Watson" from Spider-Man 90s cartoon, she just keeps complaining and ranting about a character she doesn't know (Peter Parker). She's a nice old lady in the comics, why did they insult her like this?
--------------------------------------------------------
Gluttony "I want to eat him"
Wrath "I hate you because you're his son". Attack & destroy everyone & everything
Of couse, it could be said that most people like character for "what they do," and "what the audience sees," but not "who they really are."
I doubt many people really cared for Dio Brando's back story, whereas all they know and want to see from him is multifisting, stopping time, throwing knives, and dropping steamrollers on someone. And I was beggining to think that Kenshiro was becoming a Mary Sue, but I doubt people give a crap as long as he's killing his enemies fasionably.
I did hated Mario, but considering that he's a video game character... ...yeah.
This is completely of topic but i just feel like i have to point out that fruits are supposed to be eaten by animals; that's why plants produce them. See, a fruit isn't an individual living creature, it's merely a part of a larger living creature (like a tree, a flower, or some other kind of plant). Animals eat these parts (and the very reason why fruits taste so sweet is so that animals will want to eat them) and then when the animals crap, the seeds inside the fruit (which are tough enogh to survive being passed through the animals stomach) comes out along with the crap, lands in the dirt, and can begin to grow up into a new plant. This is why Budhist munks and other ultra-vegans (or whatever you want to call them) who does'nt believe that it's right to kill anything (not even plants) only eat fruit.
