Books (book series) that span/s decades?

I am writing a sci-fi saga and I have it planned to span at LEAST twenty-five years as it follows four main characters. I also had ideas to have an additional series that follows these character's children for an additional 25 years (after they become adults), thereby encompassing part of the lives of two generations.

Is this too ambitious? Can anyone provide examples of anyone else who may have done something similar? (I haven't read anything like this so I do not want to seem like a rip-off)

James Michener wrote some epics that cover a lot of time. "Hawaii" and "Chesapeake" are a couple of my favorites.

The series that begins with "Master and Commander" by Patrick O'brian includes 21 novels and spans the career of the fictional Captain Jack Aubrey of the Royal Navy during the early 1800s.

It's not scifi, and it doesn't cover fifty years, but it does span a decade:
Gone with the Wind, and, even longer, if you include Scarlett.
Harry Potter covers six years, almost a decade.

I'm sure there are some out there. It sounds like a great idea.
