Book Recommendations? (fiction and non-fiction)?

i think you should read "The Devil's Arithmetic". It's a really good book about the Holocaust, and it tells you about the Holocaust without talking about a real person. Also, there is absolutely no romance. I hope this helps!:)
 
I'm making a Book List and ask that you helpful people out there please recommend some good books for me.
I ask that you not recommend any thing that is predominately a romance.
I prefer sci-fi, but have been wanting to read more non-fiction, provided it isn't a dry read and can be informative. I ask that you tell me a bit about the recommendations you make, if you have the time.
