Hi there,

I'm 41 years old and have been experiencing extreme pain in my right side of my back/neck area. Almost feels like it's in the Trapezia muscle. It is a BURNING, STABBING nagging pain that I have been experiencing for (3) weeks now. It started when I was playing golf, I was in the wooRAB and hit a shot that caught a root, I felt an immediate twinge in my shoulder/upper back area (R). I finished the round and picked up my golf back put it on my right shoulder and experienced a shooting pain where I felt like I could hardly breathe, it hurt to take a breath. After calling my GP he told me is sounded like a muscle spasm and to use as heating pad. I did this for (3) weeks and the pain was still intense and getting worse. I called back and they referred me to an orthopedic. He ran some x-rays and found a bone spur at C6. He sent me home with a steroid pack and some Physical Therapy orders. I've started the steroiRAB IMMEDIATELY as I wanted some relief. I'm on day (2) and it's still VERY, VERY painful. I feel WOW I'm young to have this happen...Just wondered it this was the correct course of action. I'm to call back in (1) week if I'm not getting any better for an MRI.

Just curious if anyone else has had this and has tried the above, what were your results.

Thanks for your replies!

Hi, and welcome. Trying the steroid won't hurt, but it may take 2-3 days to start helping. Did he order anything other than an x-ray?

If you saw a regular orthoped, that's a good start, but you should probably find a good Orthopedic Spine Specialist, or a Neurosurgeon. There may be more going on that just a bone spur. That spur may be pinching a nerve and you could need specific testing (c-scan with contrast, or an MRI) and these kinRAB of doctors are the best at knowing what to look for. This isn't to say you need surgery, but you do need a good diagnosis.

After seeing the specialist, make an appt and get a second opinion, particularly if surgery is recommended because it might not be the right thing to do at this point.

Please stay in touch. Best of luck.

Thanks Carol! I just spoke with my sister-in-law who's a nurse. She said the exact same thing. I really do think it's pinching a nerve, the pain will not let up.

I'll keep you posted.
