Bold 9700 vs. iPhone

So I'm eligible for a HUP on Rogers.

Currently have a BB 8310 and I'm stuck between an iPhone and a 9700.

I like the BB messenger thing (basically free texting).

But I like the big display on the iPhone.
I don't do any social networking (no Facebook, twitter etc accounts).
I use it mainly for email and surfing (news, forums, etc).

My corp plan gives me 1 gb of data /month and then I have to pay any extra.

Any suggestions?
Price is not an issue.

Get an iPhone 3GS and don't look back.

Even though you stick to the basics for now, it's those basics that the iPhone does better -- yes, even e-mail. I've used both platforms, and the iPhone is much faster at clearing unwanted mail as well as displaying mail more accurately and quickly.

And as for the web, that's no contest: Safari on the iPhone is faster, more accurate, and more intuitive because of the multi-touch screen.

If you've got to do IM, there's no shortage of iPhone clients. You can enable background push notification on the iPhone so it'll flag you when someone messages you... though I'd consider having a separate mobile-only IM account if you're the sort who gets messaged constantly when you're at your computer.

One thing I'd do if you get the iPhone is to buy a case; I prefer pouch-style cases, since they protect the screen as well as the back.

I disagree. There's a huge difference, and some games or apps are considerably more appealing on the iPhone 3GS. Plus, of course, you get video recording and a better overall camera.

Plus, if you're considering the Bold 9700, you have the cash to get an iPhone 3GS.

Come to Verizon, and check out the BB Tour, or, as my personal phone, and coming from an iPhone 3G, a Motorola Droid. I'm telling you, the 3G coverage beats AT&T by 532%!!

Giving AT&T converts great deals on new phones is sort of a hobby of mine.

i recommend trying the 3gs first, because you are already accustomed to blackberries. and if it not up to your expectations, switch to the 9700. rogers should offer some kind of 30-day grace period to be able to return your phone if you dont like it.

guess I'm off to a Rogers store this weekend..

one other question - I know that Rogers cripples UMA and that only Talkspot can be used on their consumer Blackberrys. I can't even do that b/c I'm on a corporate plan and Rogers doesn't enable it for us.

Will I run into the same issue with the iPhone 3GS?

You could be right when it comes to certain apps and games. When I had my 3G, I compared it to the 3GS in how fast Safari loads pages and the same with Google maps. There was a noticable difference when using these apps, but it wasn't significant. Those apps were the most important to me. I cant comment on the video camera since the 3G never had one. I eventually dropped the idea upgrading to the 3GS as it wasn't a big jump over the 3G.

you are right. iphone 3GS is the best thing around. However i am geting bored of it and now trying to try my hands on 9700.

The iPhone is a bit unique in how you learn to type.

Early on, you tend to hunt and peck since you're not used to it. As you get used to it, though, you pick up speed and learn to type with your thumbs. Moreover, you'll eventually learn to use the auto-correction feature to your advantage: you can work faster if you know it's going to fill out the right word.

By now, I actually type faster on my iPhone than any hardware phone keyboard I've tried - it's that fast.

THe Bold is $150 on a 3year with Telus and the iPhone 3g is $100 whereas the 3gs is $200, I'm ok with $150, but not $200 also considering my wife and I are getting phones....it we can unload our contracts.

So my situation is like this, my wife and I will not be using our phones for work, maybe the occasional work email for my wife so quick easy email is not the big concern. My wife's priorities are messaging (several friends with BB) or texting, picture messenging, and GPS.
For me I'm more complicated, I want good battery life as I hate having to charge a phone all the time, good call clarity as I have a hard time hearing people clearly on my phone, easier texting(using regular LG Venus now), something that is realitively fast going through menus, etc, Sirius radio app, i know BB in Canada doesn't have it yet, but I think its coming soon, and MP3 play capabilities.

I'm leaning towards the Bold, but I have a Mac and love it so the iPhone has me interested for sake of Apple loyalty, but thats it really.

Which phone would you recommend.

depends. i find the iphone keyboard to be more efficient in typing fast. you just have to get used to it. just like any other keyboard. and the OS is a personal preference. just depends on what you need.

apps, ease of use, full internet that is useful, streaming=iphone

e-mail, professional look, syncing, =BB

Forget brand loyality. That's your emotion leading you. I think you should go with the Bold. For me, it looks like I am going with the next gen iPhone when it comes out in a few months.

Wow. I'm surprised there isnt any more comparisons between the two. I popped into an AT&T store the other day and the dude says the BB 9700 primarily because the iPhone isn't a very good phone. He adds the 9700 is better in every respect expect when it comes to apps.

Any thoughts?

What about the argument about call quality, dropped calls et al as it pertains to the phone itself, rather than a multimedia device?
