Body Jolts

For as long as I can remember I've been experiencing the following: As I'm drifting off to sleep, or possibly just fallen asllep, I get a total body jerk. It wakes me up suddenly and it's visible to anyone around me. It usually startles my wife pretty good and wakes her out of her sleep most of the time. However, recently this has been happening when I'm wide awake, not falling asleep. I may be in deep thought, or no thought, but I'm always laying still, or sitting up still when this occurs. The jolts have gotten more violent and many times it actually causes pain (I suffer from chronic pain from my back, legs, arms, etc.). Does anyone have this happening to them, or have any possible explanations? Thank you.

wow i have this too but have never met anyone else who has it ...i have had it for years on a regular basis and it always happens as i am falling asleep...but it does not cause any major problem so i have never had it checked. I have no idea what it is but would be good to know. Have you asked a doctor?

I haven't talked to a doctor about it, but I will be when I see him next time. I saw another thread, maybe on this site maybe on another...Other people described similar symptoms, but almost always when falling asllep, or already asleep. The fact that it is now happening when I'm awake is concerning me. I'll mention it to my doctor when I see him. How about you? Does it happen while you're awake?

hi, no it has never happened to me when i am awake..always when i on the edge of sleep my body just jolts...sometimes so much i sit up in bed...to people around it appears i have had a fright or something haha...i have no idea what it is but i have had it for years so i presume it is nothing really bad...although if it were to happen when i was awake i would maybe get concerned...i might look around the net and see what i can find.

I believe those are called Myoclonic Jerks. If it's happening while you are wide awake, you might want to look up seizures.

you say you suffer from chronic pain? do you take pain medicine? i'ved been told that this is a side effect of the pain medicine. specially when goin to sleep. i've also been told that if taken for to long these twitches can become permanant..... may wanna talk to your dr.

Thanks to all who responded. Yes I'm on strong narcotic pain meds (MS Contin 130 MG 3 times daily & Percocet 10 MG 4 times daily). I'll have to talk to my doctor about it if it continues to happen while I'm awake.
