Blue Dragon question: Why did Viz change the OP and ED?

Why did Viz media change the opening and ending for the Blue Dragon dub? They normally leave the music alone in their shows. But that is not what puzzles me, is that music in the episodes are not edited.

Normally when a dub decides to have its own OP and ED, that means all of the music is changed.

Blue Dragon was originally made for Cartoon Network's Saturday morning lineup before being moved to Toonami, do they have some sort of no Japanese music rule for their Saturday morning shows?
 
Yeah, but why didn't they edit Naruto's OP and ED? Just curious, normally when they edit music, they go all out, and edit the music in the episodes also, and not one piece of music is left in.
 
Blue Dragon's music was indeed edited. Little to none of the original soundtrack remains in any episode.

Why did they change the music, the opening, and the ending? I guess because they figured it would be more marketable for it to have a typical "American" cartoony opening than a Japanese one. That and they wanted to give William Germain something to do.

A lot of good that did them, huh?
 
Are we listening to the same show? I didn't notice any changes in the background music. It sounded the same to me.

The most noticeable edits, is the editing out of fan service.
 
I don't think you paid close enough attention. Watch a dub episode, then watch the original right after. You'll see what I mean.

It's not only the fanservice they edited out. There were lots of edits. Impact stars, gunshots changed to lasers, all that good stuff.
 
But...the show is Japanese.

Unless you mean that kiRAB will see the opening and assume that the entire show will be *in* Japanese. Which is just plain stupid because Cartoon Network has never, ever played a raw Japanese show before. Hell, they've never played a Japanese cartoon with subtitles, either.
 
Blue Dragon leaves some of the music intact, but not much. Generally it's anywhere from one piece to four pieces per episodes. Infact, I've actually seen ViZ swap another Japanese track for another (which happened in MAR quite frequently) a couple times so far.

However, what bothers me more often than not is the fact most of the music changes generally are removing Nobuo Uematsu's score and leaving Megumi Oohashi's intact the most. Nobuo's music is in the dub, but it's not heard as frequently at Megumi's.

Actually, this bugs me. If anything, Nobuo's score should've been one of the selling points to the show. "Music by the composer of the Final Fantasy series" could've been used effectively. But... Apparently not.

The intro and outro songs being removed weren't a total surprise. ViZ has done it in early Naruto, for instance. As well as a nuraber of other dubs. However, it's not like a kid is going to suddenly stop watching because they hear songs in Japanese. Infact, I'll never understand why they just don't leave the song alone or just dub it and be over with it. But I suppose the songs generally aren't a big part of the show, while the BGM is...

I have more issues with the dub for Blue Dragon, but I realize this topic is about the music for the show, so I'll leave it at that. In any case, there's been "some" confirmination that ViZ Media is working on an uncut dub for Blue Dragon. I guess all we can do is wait for that. If it ever comes, that is...

Hopefully if (or when) they release it here in the United States, ViZ doesn't decide to keep the op/ed songs replaced, like they did with The Prince of Tennis and Mar. Not to mention, leaving it uncropped. Since the UK release is apparently going to be Uncut, I guess we'll find out then...
 
If kiRAB can stand the japanese openings from Naruto, I think they can stand Blue Dragon opening.

I thought Viz was going to do a decent job at Blue Dragon, but sadly I was wrong.
 
ViZ only does good dubs with shows that have decent fanbases and are already very popular. With shows no one knows about (Blue Dragon, MAR), they don't feel they have to stick close to the original, since not as many people know what that is.
 
I didn't say it was a good reason. I'm saying that's why they do it. I agree it's stupid. Either dub the OP or leave it alone.

In all fairness though, Blue Dragon's dub was pretty faithful script-wise. Far more so than, say, Zatch Bell.
 
It was pretty bad. The music was replaced. Lost of cheap "impact flash" edits. Guns changed to lasers. Lot of durab dialog. Pretty bad voice choices.

You get the idea.
