Blu-Ray outselling HD-DVD

I read that in the States Blu-Ray discs are now outselling HD-DVD discs by a ratio of 3:1. Of course, this is down to the number of PS3 machines bought recently.
It's also interesting to see the larger release schedule for Blu-Ray discs reflecting the proportion of studios it has onboard.
These scenarios are bound to be repeated in this country so is there any hope for HD-DVD?

I would say the long term future of both is in serious doubt.

Blu-Ray has a better catalogue currently, but big hitters wont be available until mass market sales arrive ,and thats not happening anytime soon.

Both formats are releasing titles with less extras than the dvd.
Pointless!!
So much for increased capacity.

Joe Public wont be buying a games console to play HD movies, and with BR players double the cost of HDDVD players that leaves BR sales to early adopters and an expected UK surge when the PS3 comes out.

HDDVD does not have support from Disney or Fox .

While 2 formats exist HD movies wont be going mass market until a dual format player is available for well under

The in-built DVD player as standard was a key factor in breaking the PS2 onto the market. I would be an interesting reversal if the PS3 was key in breaking Blu-Ray into the market.

HD-DVD releases are dire at the moment in the UK, the states has a much better selection . let's hope they come over soon or it'll be laser disc all over again with US releases being the driving force. The price in UK stores does'nt help either

I don't think the jump from dvd to HD-DVD/BluRay is big enough for people to rebuy their film collection... I think the big thing that both are missing out on is utilising the big disc space - could you imagine a whole series of 24/Lost etc.... on one disc?

DepenRAB. The LG machine is nearly as expensive as buying one of each - as it has to pay for licences to Sony and (I think) Toshiba. That neeRAB to be addressed before dual format machines will catch on.

Also the LG machine cannot access the menus and some special features on HD-DVD discs so it's not yet the 100% solution we were hoping for.
Still, it's interesting to see how things pan out.

Not with the way PS3 sales are going. Sony have lost millions through poor sales of the PS3 (can't remember the exact figure but it was in the Evening Standard's City section and it's a huge amount).

Import tax, shipping etc.

I bought the Golden Girls season five boxset off Amazon US which cost $35 on their site. With all the taxes and what-not it ended up costing me $89.

I'm personally not sure how well the PS3 is going to do. It's been majorly delayed, espcecially when compared with the Xbox360 and the Wii, and its amazingly expensive.

This will set it back - but its the only console with a Hi Def DVD player as standard - which will give it an "in" to the market - doubling as a Blu Ray player (for which it is rather cheap) and a 3rd gen console. Will be interesting to see - although I hear (above) initial sales have been slow.

like someone has already posted - the sales don't really reflect much at all.
it could have been a bad week, with 3 BR discs and 1 HDDVD sold :)

with more and more people seeing the benefit of streaming/downloading files, the 'war' between these two formats, each with their own pitfalls, might be a mute point.

Agreed. It happened with music. The successor to the CD has obviously not been another disc, but MP3's and internet downloading. Maybe the same thing will happen to movies.

You think we'll be able to get the quality required for HD without a hard format? Would be cool, but I don't think broadband in the UK is up to that in the foreseeable future due to inconsistent phone lines (many can't pipe more than 1 or 2 meg) and distribution. Would be crushingly slow even at high speeRAB to get a HD format streamed.
