Blog Talkback: Toons of the 2000s: Top 25 Animated Television Series Countdown #5-1

I have to say, if given the chance, I would rearrange this list pretty heartily. The biggest problems I have are that King of the Hill is too low and Kim Possible is too high, and I have about a thousand other little nitpicks as well. Still, this list was a heavily collaborative effort - it had a lot of writers, IIRC, and a lot of people contributing opinions - so it makes sense that it'd be a little conflicted.

So, what does everybody think of the crossover pics at the bottom? Speaking purely for myself, all my complaints were waved aside at the sight of Phineas handing Edward Elric a screwdriver.:anime:

Mobile Suit Gundam 00: I gave up on this after only two episodes. Possibly, a poor choice by me. I was turned off be how generic it seemed, but maybe I should have given it more time.

Samurai Champloo: Samurai Cowboy Bebop? Amazing, simply amazing. I've only seen random episodes (A good amount of which). I'll most likely watch this series through when I get a Blu-Ray setup.

Phineas and Ferb: I said this in the Top 5 Disney Talkkback and I'll say it again. I really should check this out. I missed it because I have a disliking against recent Disney.

Invader Zim: One of my top five favorite Nicktoons of all time. It's wierd that this didn't appear on the Top 5 Nicktoons of the 2000's list, but it definately deserves it's spot here. It gained alot of love from me at the time not just because of it's unique brand of humor, but because I was really into the paranormal and a bit wierd as a kid. I could really relate to Dib.

Fullmetal Alchemist: This deserves a high ranking spot in any great fantasy list. This is a terrific series and is one of (if not) the best shonen series ever. Plus, cudos to the original anime series for taking the source material and making a completely different, but just as good, story. Speaking of source material, the pics used in the article are from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and not the first anime.

The list isn't bad per se, in fact i agree with about... 3 of the top 5...

But where's Clone High? One of the most underrated, funniest, subversive shows in the 2000s and it's not mentioned. I don't usually do this but...

FAIL.

My opinions:
Mobile Suit Gundam: Never seen, but it really isn't my kind of show
Samuri Champloo: See above
Phineas and Ferb: I am glad to see this one here. This is one of the best cartoons to come put in the past few years IMO.
Invader Zim: I guess it was alright, but I'm not really a fan of dark humor.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Never seen it

My Opinions:
King of the Hill: Don't watch
El Tigre: Never seen
Home Movies: I didn't really care for it that much
Chowder: I haven't watched it much since, but I like the first season
Teen Titans: Not my kind of show, but it was alright

So this list wont be limited to shows that premiered in 00s but instead is a list of the top 25 animated television series that were airing (meaning premieres episodes) in the 00s.

Good to see Chowder and Home Movies make the list. Not suprised about King of the Hill, it's certainly earned it's place. Teen Titans is no surprise either. Never saw El Tigre and never cared to but maybe I'll check it out some time. Seems it was quite short lived.

Here's my personal Top 10 of the Decade

I'm only posting the link so as to save space, there is a lot of my personal opinion on each show in my top 10. Also, it is very superhero centric, mainly because I grew up on comic books.

Huh? Only four shows have been animes. Considering the fact that there are a lot of animes (as far as I know, Japan doesn't even produce anything else), I'd call it "cultural diversity" to actually have shows from countries outside of the US on there. And no, Avatar is not anime, though it's sometimes called an "amerime." :p
What do you have against anime anyway?
Oh yeah, and I say BB still has a chance. You'd think JL(U) would be higher than it, but you'd also think South Park would be higher than Invader Zim. And I'm sure TSSM is going to be in there, probably in the Top Five, maybe even #1 (that or Simpsons, I'd think).

Phineas and Ferb: Only saw one episode. Wasn't impressed.
Full Metal Alchemist: Should've been higher. Why? Because one of the episodes (not saying which for those who haven't seen it, but fans of the show should know which one I'm referring to) has to be the most powerful thing I've ever seen on television - that includes cartoons, live-action, and maybe even movies. This series is absolutely amazing.

Wow, Kim Possible in the top five. It's definitely one of my top ten favorite cartoons of the decade, but I wouldn't have expected it go get that high on this list.

I must've missed part of the list somewhere along the way. Because I didn't see Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles anywhere:confused:

Won't comment on order until the list is fully up.

- King of the Hill: Definitely has had its moments and sometimes I wonder why I didn't watch this show a whole lot more.
- El Tigre: Probably the first of several shows on this list which turned me off on first impression but might have ended up better than I thought it would.
- Home Movies: Loved it until the characters started cursing regularly (4th season)... that was a huge turn-off.
- Chowder: Great first season, but quality has been inconsistent since.
- Teen Titans: Great show, though I became disinterested in the show's final season.

I just have never cared for anime stuff. and i just glance through it hurriedly, i musta thought there were more anime then there actually is. I don't think BB or TSSM will be on the list, i would be even more shocked if X-Men: Evo makes the list. my guesses on the top 10 incude:

Yugioh
Family Guy
Simpsons
Avatar
and stuff like that.

Well? ?Kim Possible? was an interesting selection, to say the least. I was the lead author on the Top 5 Disney Animated Television Series list and I refused to place ?Kim Possible? any higher than #3 because I felt that it was a flawed series despite its quality. Not everybody agreed with my assessment; quality is subjective, after all. I would have liked to see ?The Weekenders? get ranked that high ? or get ranked at all ? seeing as how it was #1 on our Disney list. However, as I have said earlier and as Nakak mentioned above, different individuals contributed to different lists. I made my case for several shows regarding this list, but I was far from the only one contributing and other shows just got more support.

My thoughts on certain shows so far

KOTH: Deserves a spot on the list and glad that it made it to 25.

El Tigre: Never saw it, but the fact that it did land on another list in this series does make me want to watch it now.

Home Movies: It was very enjoyable show that I can go back to watch. While it's animation is average, it's mostly it's writing that I'm attracted to.

Chowder: While my opinion on this is mixed due to the spectacular first season, but hit or miss second and third, I think it does deserve it's props. Just as long as Flapjack ranks higher.

Teen Titans: I actually liked the goofy take on this series, but then again I never read a single Teen Titans comic book.

Having seen quite a few episodes of Danny Phantom, I can safely say that it is NOT a better show than South Park and King of the Hill. I very much disagree with its placement on this list.

Hmm....

The Venture Brothers at #5? Really? I watch the show, but I wouldn't have put it in the Top 5. It defintiely doesn't deserve to be ranked above Futurama.

Kim Possible at #4. The show was OK, and it deserves some credit for being among the few longer running animated series with a female star, but KP never really pulled me in. I think that putting KP in the Top 5 is being a tad generous.

Samurai Jack at #3? Again, I must ask, really? I've always liked the fantastical future as a setting, and SJ was very nice to look at, but the episodes themselves were pretty boring, to be honest.

Foster Home for Imaginary Friends - Again, an OK show, but much higher on the lists than it deserves to be.

Avatar: the Last Airbender - Avatar was good, but I didn't like it that much. Hoenstly, I think that Avatar is just a tad overrated for my tastes. No offense to any of the shows' fans.

I enjoyed Fosters and all but ehhh. That's how I feel about the top five. But that's just my opinion. I don't understand what made Kim Possible so popular and while I gave Samurai Jack a shot, the show just drrrrrrraaaaaaaged. There wasn't much to it outside the great animation. I had a suspicion that Avatar was going to be number one. So I really wasn't surprised there.

IMHO, Spongebob, South Park and Family Guy have been the most popular and the most influential mainstream cartoon shows of the past decade. If I was to make my own top 25 list I'd probably put these three shows at the very top, mainly because of how important they've been to pop culture. However, this list seems mostly biased towards action cartoons, which (Batman: TAS aside) never really seem to have much of an impact outside of animation circles.

Yu-Gi-Oh! isn't going to make this list but I wouldn't be surprised if some other blatanly shounen anime show up.

More anime than I expected I must say.

Gundam 00 - Guess I really should give this one a fair chance but I always get bored watching it.

Samurai Champloo - Honestly I like this show better than Bebop. It's more my style. Great series, great fun and not too overbaring. Glad to see it on the list.

Phineas and Ferb - Another show I should probably check out but simply haven't bothered with.

Invaider Zim - It is a bit overrated and maybe too high on this list but it's also a very amusing and awesome show so I'm glad to see it.

Fullmetal Alchemist - I once adored this show and I still have an appreciation for it but at the same time it's lost a lot of value to me. I'm not surprised to see it on the list but this seems a little high maybe depending on what comes after it.
