Blog Talkback: Toons of the 2000s: Bottom 5 Cartoons

I've only seen a few episodes of Loonatics: Unleashed, but based on those episodes - and having seen the majority of classic Looney Tunes shorts - I couldn't agree more. The animation style (and background) was the only thing that didn't botter me on that show, however that didn't make up for the disgrace it was.

When I read that Ratatoing review here (which was very funny ;)), I couldn't help myself to at least watch the trailer. The worst 5 minutes of watching something... ever. Seriously to everyone who hasn't seen it (or the trailer), do yourself a favour and keep it that way. The fact that the announcer sounded like he just woke up didn't help much either.

Sadly, I've also seen Mulan II - though it obviously suffered from a lack of everything the first movie had, I still think that the 'cheapquel' Cinderella II: Dreams Come True was far worse - even if it was comprised of episodes (who weren't even good enough to become a series :shrug:). I can deal with less than superior animation, but the characters were all so out of well... character - same goes for Belle's Magical World.

Can't really comment on the rest, since I haven't seen 'em, but reading through the blog I might as well be glad I haven't. :D
 
When APC showed on TV, we didn't having again SpikeTV but my father buying our first real satellite for his work apartment and having this channel. I having just the occasion to watch the original shows and keeping 3 episodes i recorded from the Spike's version.

I finally buy the DVD and i was more amazed to the art style and animation than for the content. I agree that Onward and Upward have a very empty plot but Altruists is somewhat the most funniest of this short-lived series because they have a gag plot.

I'm enough lucky to watched Loonatics: Unleashed just for the first episode. I remember asked to the community to watching this before judging. I don't think it's a so embarassing cartoon. Maybe the only thing who bother me is their edgy look.
 
Eh, I get the number 1 is bad, but I think it would've been more entertaining to explain why it's bad. Yes, yes, I know, it should be self-explanatory, but it's still not a particularly entertaining review, especially compared to the far more informative tone of the first four listed.
 
Liked it, except for two things...

1. 12 oz Mouse is actually really good, once you realize that there's something bigger going on behind the premise of "crudely drawn mouse drinks and stuff". It seems like whoever nominated it (like a lot of people) for a Dishonorable Mention simply watched the first episode (which I will agree is pretty bad) and called it a day.

2. Kinda disappointed that Ratatoing was #1. Sure, it's bad, but it feels like a cop-out. Everyone and their grandmother has ripped apart Video Brinquedo's stuff, and this review hardly even said why it was so bad. It practically all hyperbole on things you could be doing instead of watching Ratatoing. I'd rather see something more obscure, more vile be #1.
 
I am going to say something very controversial. Something I said a few years ago and something I still believe today. I believe that is Loonitics was released in the early nineties yet it's quality remained the same and Tiny toons was released today and it's quality remained the same their popularity would have switched. People would have been more open to loonitics and would have refused to give Tiny Toons a chance. Tiny Toons would be remembered as a crappy show that is a desgrace to the original looney toons and it's characters would be treated like lame replacements and ripoffs. Loonitics on the other hand would have lasted longer and given more of a chance and seen differently then it is.

Now please don't flame me I'm not saying Loonitics was a good show (But it did improve in season two and I saw planet Blac as a sign of respect NOT a "Coffen roll" moment) and I'm not saying Tiny toons sucked I loved Tiny Toons. I'm just saying that we have gotten critical as time went on and with the popularity of the internet prejudging became more prevolent.

If Tiny toons was annouced for the first time today it would never be given a chance because people would denouce it due to it's very premus this I believe.
 
I thought the reason it was on there was because it's a terrible show. The original Looney Toons are loved almost everywhere, so it's not a TZ exclusive thing. There's a good reason for it, because they were actually good and well animated and funny and the list goes on. What were the good points of Loonatics Unleashed?



I think there might be some truth to this. But if both of those shows were the same quality just in different times, I still think Loonatics would be looked down upon because it's a bad show. Tiny Toons would probably have a small but dedicated following to anyone who actually watches it and isn't a kid. Kids would probably still watch it. But yea I think older fans would write it off before its debut.
 
Am I the only one who actually liked Transformers: Armada? I thought it was pretty awesome show after the first so many episodes. Yeah, the Transformermon (Mini-Cons) were really lame, but once it shed it's episodic structure, the series vastly improved. It had Starscream character development! That and it borrowed elements from Transformers: The Movie really well. Armada wasn't a great show, but it wasn't "one of the worst shows of the decade." Now, Transformers: Energon was awful.
 
While most of Ren & Stimpy APC is crap, I must say I love Ren Seeks Help. It's a brilliant episode in every way and I still enjoy watching it. The voice acting of the frog is hilarious. Ren is hilarious. The drawings & animation are fantastic.

And Mr Horse's pay-off to the episode? "Psychologist?! Are you nuts?! I'm a HORSE!!"? It's honestly one of the funniest Ren & Stimpy lines ever.
 
I like Transformers: Armada too. I thought that the storyline was pretty interesting, there was some solid character development and there were times where the kids were somewhat, at least, useful. It was an overall enjoyable show, so I was kind of surprised that it made the dishonorable list. Granted, it was the first Transformers series I saw, but I thought that it was more interesting than the Energon or Cybertron series.
 
I Liked Armada too. While I wouldn't put it in my top 50 it was enjoyable enough and it did get more interesting after they put less emphasis on finding the Minicons and the annoying kids. It also gave us a pretty decent game for the PS2. I loathed Energon and Cybertron with its awful mix of traditional and CG monstrosities and that Kicker twit.
 
I liked Transformers Armada too, actually its my favorite incarnation of the franchise, the 2 sequels (energon and the other one) were lame though.
 
Armada might not have been anywhere near as good as certain other Transformers series, but seriously, its still better than the original series.
 
Honestly, while I thought the animation was good enough, I didn't think it was on par with the first film. The sequel felt too bright and saccherine for me to stomach which contrasts with the first's far more graceful tones.

For a time, I did have a sentence talking exactly about this, but I took it down when I realized A.) others probably didn't feel that way and it may just be me and B.) This issue is more minor then the other things wrong with the film because at least it's passable.
 
Hmm...

Have to disagree with "Emperor's New School" meriting a dishonorable mention. I thought it was funny, despite that it may as well be on Earth-2 vs. the original film on Earth-1, or something, as well as being yet another "kid goes to school" show. Certainly more entertaining than "The Replacements" or "Teamo Supremo" (the latter being a Powerpuff Girls knockoff Disney made in the early 2000s)...

As for the list itself: I agree "Adult Party Cartoon" and "Loonatics Unleashed" were pretty bad. The former I saw on DVD... ick. The latter, I watched when it originally ran, and yeah, some bizarre stuff (a *human* Foghorn Leghorn and Pepe le Pew? No mention of or remnants of their "ancestors"?).

Still, the worst cartoon that wasn't listed should've been "Coconut Fred", probably the show I hated the most this decade, and true example of awfulness. *Nothing* redeeming about this show... this was probably one of the worst things I'd seen this decade *period*, live-action or animated.

No mention of Shark Tale? Pretty much the nadir of the "farting CGI animals creepily caricatured off of BIG-NAME CELEBRITY! voice artists" trend of the '00's. :mad: Honestly, I dislike the movie more and more as I think about it.
 
Regarding the hypothetical situation wherein Tiny Toons and Loonatics are switched around in time, I imagine the former would have been less popular (for different reasons), but the latter would have fallen so flat that nothing like Animaniacs, Pinky & the Brain, or Freakazoid! would ever have been bankrolled afterward.
