Blog Talkback: Did You Know This Was Anime? - Superbook

I remember seeing an episode of this during CCD many years ago. It was an interesting concept and held my attention back then. How about Chris or Gizmo for TvC2? :p

Yes, I knew it was anime (it, and it's companion series The Flying House). I've more or less seen every episode (of both shows).

Last I checked, both shows were still airing on TBN's "Smile of a Child" network. You can even watch the channel on their official website.

Funny - I was just reading about Superbook yesterday while crawling through the history of Tatsunoko. Interesting concept with a REALLY interesting past, and it seems like a pretty cute show, to boot.

Hours before this topic and the weblog post appeared, I wrote an electronic message to the Christian Broadcasting Network in response to the network's plans to create a new series titled "Superbook" with computer-generated imagery after finding a segment about it on "The 700 Club Interactive" on the Family Channel (previously known as CBN, The CBN Family Channel, The Family Channel, and FOX Family Channel, but now known as ABC Family). I expressed why I felt the new version was unnecessary and expressed appreciation for the people who worked on the original version.

I didn't know it was anime all I remember is watching it here in Puerto Rico in one of the many christian channels Spanish dubbed.

Eh, well, that's a matter of perspective. It's certainly not an all-ages cartoon that has aged with scions of the 1980's such as myself, but it worked for kids and that's really who it was meant to work for. Ultimately I'd say it's basically the same tier as The Littl' Bits or Adventures of The Little Koala on Nick, or the stunningly long-lived Doraemon. These are respectable for what they are.

Oh-ho-ho.

Yeah, i remember that.

Times were weird, back then in the beginning of the 90s... One of the consequences of the fall of SU was that numerous religious organisations (of all kinds: big or small) found totally new and undiscovered land to explore and millions of faithless soviet citizens to convert.

Daytime TV was literally chocked full with religous programmes of all sorts, including "Superbook". Kids and i'm afraid parents didn't really realised (living in SU makes you VERY naive) that this harmless cartoon is a part of this block, and watched it.

I must confess that i know most of the biblical stories i remember is all "Superbook's" work (that's saying a LOT, with me being moderate muslim).

I didn't know it was anime when I saw it as a kid in the 80s on Pat Robertson's channel CBN, but I definitely knew it was foreign. I probably approached it with the "cheap Chinese/Japanese junk" prejudice that was prevalent then.
