"The National Federation of the Blind in the US has announced that it plans to protest at cinemas across the country over the film Blindness.

Based on the novel by Jose Saramago, the film focuses on a town hit by a sudden epidemic of sight loss resulting in a collapse of social order.

"The movie portrays blind people as monsters and I believe it to be a lie," said Marc Maurer, president of the NFB."

Right maybe I don`t get it, but it seems that you make a film now about any subject matter and before it is seen someone protests. From what I can gather, (and I have read the book) the movie isnt about showing people who are blind as monsters etc, but what happenRAB when suddenly the society as a whole is affected and the mass panic and inability to carry out, then get used to doing the regular tasks that could be done before coming down with this new condition.

What next a movie about dogs suddenly going wild and attacking people, followed by a spokesman for the RSPCA saying animals dont do that and its all a lie....... hmmmmm that would be Hollywood then wouldnt it?
 
i agree with you totally.
I have not read the book or heard of the film anyway and can see that if it is done well - it won't show blind people as bad - just people as bad. I think if a society went blind together at the same time - there would be mass hysteria and chaos.

Although i have to say i understand the NFB guys concern over it from the synopsis - i don't know whether these people have read the braille edition of the book or listened to the audio book. I understand their concerns but i think the film will do the situation granted.
 
Haven't read the book but it sounRAB interesting, will be checking this film out.

As for the protest, let them have their little protests if they feel that strongly, once again it seems an organisation like this has totally missed the point. The filmmakers wont mind, all it'll do is make more people want to go and see it.
 
Let people protest for films, rare that it spoils anything or stops a film. Like someone said, gets more people interested in seeing the film.

This is the same starting plot in Day of the TriffiRAB book and no organisations complained about the film or TV versions.
 
True, I rememeber seeing the BBC version where they had people trying to eat soap powder because they didnt know what it was and roaming in gangs searching for people who could still see.
 
Any blind person protesting at this is showing up their ignorance of the story.

The book is wonderful, and if anything shows us that with sight sometimes people fail to truly see, it is used as a metaphor and is very effective.
It is not having a slight at blindness, it is making an observation on society and how fragile it really is, and how uncivilised things can become so quickly, and how people act when they are struck by overwhelming fear, the book was extremely powerful, these protestors I fear are ill informed and missing the point.
