Bleach fans (need some advice)

I want to get into bleach anime, but have been avoiding it because of the number of episodes.
I was wondering if viewing all 200+ episodes is essential to understanding the overall story?

I mean is there a beginning, middle & end for every, say 26 episodes?

Some guidance would be appreciated, thanks.
 
Just to be on the safe side, just watch them all. After awhile you will begin to notice whats important to the story and whats just filler, but anyways, go for it. Its worth a watch
 
If you only want the story, skip all the fillers which are about 100 episodes of the whole 280+. If you watch it religiously and skip all the fillers, then it won't take long at all to watch all of them.
 
Not really a big Bleach fan (except for the Opening and Ending Songs), I suggest that you skip the Bount Arc, Capt. Amagai and Zanpakutou Filler Arcs if you want to concentrate on the real story itself... I personally skipped the whole Capt. Amagai Arc and didn't bother watching the second Zanpakutou Filler Arc...
 
Watch the episodes but skip all the filler, as Ian said above the SS Arc is the best of the show by far, then it goes downhill with loads of pointless filler episodes so skip all of those and just stick to the canon episodes.
 
Personally I'd watch it all, I think the beginning episodes story/plot wise are better, but the fight scenes are always good, and there are some cool characters as well. For the most part the fillers are watchable, the Captain Amagai arc is kind of boring and the Sword Fiends arc starts of pretty interesting, but then drags on too long. For better or for worse the flow of the show has changed a lot since the beginning, but you should watch all the episodes to see the progression of the show.
 
I dunno, I really don't find the progression to be at all entertaining due to grievous pacing issues. It's just not fun to see dozens and dozens of episodes of Ichigo standing around slack-jawed at an opponent powering up over several episodes from various angles, nor are the fights themselves much better later on as they consist of Ichigo and whatever opponent he's fighting standing around in the air glaring back and forth or else "zwee fighting" with a couple of sword clashes every so often. It's not engaging for a viewer at all. The storyline and actually interesting characters have all been thrown to the side unfortunately. They're just jobbers who barely manage to keep up with the bad guys henchmen and often get pummeled by the main bad guy so Ichigo gets to step in and show that yes, despite being a completely uninteresting protagonist, he is in fact still the main character.

I dunno, I guess Bleach is a rather fitting name considering anything "colorful" about the show to begin with has been thoroughly removed at this point.
