Blair Witch

Oh yes I noticed the similarities too. I think Ghostwatch should be shown again; it was superb. I don't think the audiences were ready for it in those days.
 
I am surprised how very scary this Ghostwatch was as they got into childkilling /abuse as a factual thing in the story , very good Beeb show , the link explains it all I posted
 
I was one of those people. :o

I didn't think it was scary at all, mainly it was just annoying. I'm not one of those people who thinks horror films have to be all buckets of blood and limbs flying everywhere (things like Saw etc. are just as dull, IMO) but Blair Witch was just... meh, okay, but hardly the suspense-filled, terrifying psychological horror that'd been promised.

Terrible as it is, the sequel's still my guilty pleasure.
 
the blair witch ain't the best film in the world, but its the first time something like that had been tried and it made millions.

i dare anyone to go into the wood in complete darkness only a torch to hand and 1 freind. Then find an abandoned house and enter it.

Never in a million years would i do that.

very creepy ending that makes you think (no sarcastic comments please)

A movie from the 90's that you might like is Campfire Tales. Way under-rated in my opinion. It was a series of spooky short stories which were better than average.
 
Will check it out an one I think was a video nasty but under rated was the camp/slasher film

One of the most over-hyped and over-rated films in recent years. It was about as scary as an episode of the Tweenies. I was in my last year of high school back in 99' and everyone was talking about it, and most thought it was real. I have never witnessed such hype around a film in my life.

Ghostwatch on the other hand .. yikes .. :eek:
 
TBO I never liked the film, it was not an original idea just a mix of other films, Cannibal Holocaust, The Last Broadcast, but they did use the net to there advantage to spread the "Blair witch legend" I preferred the sequel which imo is a much better film:)
 
I really wish people would agree to disagree without making patronising comments like this, implying that if you didn't think a film was good, and they did, then it's because you're too stupid to recognise what was going on.
No, I don't think you're any more intelligent or knowledgeable than me if you found this was a successful film, and I didn't. It boils down to a matter of opinion and taste.
If the gimmick of the way it was filmed doesn't work for some viewers, that's not because they're less sophisticated than you.
It just didn't work for me--it didn't scare me, okay? If you found it frightening, fine, I can't argue with that, or say my reaction is superior to yours. Please grant me the same courtesy.
 
Cannibal Holocaust.

The story was based on a group of four documentary film makers who went to the Amazonian jungle to investigate the tribes there, and all the promotions and advertising presented it as real documentray footage. The actors who die in it were under contract to not do any other media work or reveal themselves in the public eye for a full year after the film had been released.

Even the director was arrested and charged with the murder of several actors in the film. He had to go to court to prove that he didn't really kill them for the film and that he didn't really impale a woman on a pole.
Blair Witch can hardly touch it in terms of controversy and power.
Sergio Leone rated it a masterpiece in cinematographic realism.

Cannibal Holocaust makes Blair Witch look like a Disney film.
 
No need for a personal attack... I'm just pointing out that you appear to think that it was made by professional actors and film makers. Most of the enjoyment and interest of the film comes from knowing how it was made, and that was mostly what the pre-release publicity was about. I don't think it can be judged as just a standalone film - I saw it more as an art project, with the film being just one part of the project (albeit the part that made all the money). If, knowing that, you still think it's rubbish then that's fine. Where did I say that my reaction is superior or that I am more intelligent or knowledgeable or sophisticated? :confused: Sorry for upsetting you.

BTW. I agree that The Haunting and Dead of Night are two of the best horror films.
 
But it was slightly different in that it was scripted, not a trick played on the film students. It's also a very unpleasant film because of all the real animal killings in it .
 
The principals were professional, career actors. It may have been early in their careers, but they have all gone on to do more roles since BWP. Heather has 14, Josh 37, Mike 9.

There was more than that. For example, as I recall when Heather finRAB the bloody rag, she just threw it away and had to be told to retrieve it and open it to find the teeth.

As I said, the film doesn't stand alone. That's a problem if you go into the cinema without any prior knowledge - which is how I prefer to view most films the first time.
