blackberry curve problem,help please?

I am trying to soft my friends blackberry,bluetooth is not working on it,it is not recieving files,it acts like its doing something then says sending failed.Also it is not formatting her memory card.Is this because she has not phoned her phone company yet and told them she has a blackberry?And she does not have the blackberry add on bundle yet
