Blackberry Bold 9700 question about 3G?

i know how incredibly stupid i am, but i got a blackberry bold 9700 today and got it unlocked. when i first switched it on it got me to connect to my wireless router and didn't connect to vodafone (my network) unitl i searched through settings and basically guessed my way into it. I am now getting texts as normal and have disconnected it from my router but it still has a 3G symbol in the top right corner next to the signal strength bar - does this mean it is connected to the internet and will charge me on my contract, or does it just mean i could connect if i wanted to but isn't connected now?

in 'manage connections' the only thing ticked is 'mobile network vodafone uk' does this mean it is working simply as a mobile phone and i don't need to worry about data charges?

Thank you in advance and sorry for my lack of knowledge!!
