BLACK HISTORY MONTH: WHAT FOR?

Each february, black history month for what. what black history or culture are we celebrating. Is it some sort of recognition for the blacks who fought for their freedom with civil rights, peace, lawsuits, etc or is it black culture origins and traditions that came from Africa. How can we be celebrating black history when blacks themselves don't know who they are and whites in general don't care much for it.

In any event, do we need black history month. is it some form of christmas for the blacks to celebrate their rise from oppession, slavery, and forced exlcusion to better lives. Do blacks even care about this crucial month. What is going on here.
 
Black History Month originated in 1926 as "N e g r o History Week". Apparently there were too many important events and people to remember and/or celebrate so they expanded it to an entire month (albeit the shortest month of the year).

Why does it continue to be celebrated?

Two words: white guilt. ;)
 
I think it's mainly to celebrate what black people have done to innovate society. Seeing as how blacks were once thought of as savage and not considered human, I'm not surprised this month exists. Ironically black people were once more intelligent and human than the obnoxious fake-ass wannabe gangster black people of today, but I know that's not all black people.

To be honest, I'm not sure why there is only one month dedicated to it. There isn't a month dedicated to American history, or European history or anything. I really think black history should get it's own category rather than simply being forgotten about after the month is over. I think it's simply to recognize that our modern society wasn't just built by white people and that there were black people involved. Then again, a ton of races were involved in the formation of modern society.
 
the african american ethnic group is only one ethnic group if they have a history month every other ethnic group should have one as well.
