Black History Month - a celebration of film

:yay:

But, I know what you mean. I have a huge stack of movies to watch. And it doesn't help that I also go to the theater pretty frequently.

No prob! Oh yes, you must check it out. It has a few great scenes. It's good to see it even if it's just once.

Cool. I'll def have to check it out.

 Well, I'd have to watch and send back the movies I have, first! I'll try to do that by the end of the month - promise.

Makes sense. Thanks for answering. :)

I love Denzel and Forest, so I'll still check it out on DVD.

I saw it when I was kid and that was ages ago. The series is on DVD so you could definitely rent it.

It was very by the numbers, very typical, it doesn't break any new ground. A few scenes had been done before by other movies and done better. One of the sub plots was uninspired (I'm talking about the love triangle) and just there to create easy conflict, but it didn't really work for me.

Forest Whitaker has such a small role, but he makes the most of it. He's so wonderful. :sigh:

I don't know, the best parts were the debates, but it wasn't a powerhouse of a movie when it absolutely should've been.

I've never actually watched Roots. I remember there was talk about it when I was a kid. If it's on DVD I should totally rent it. I don't think they're going to rerun it anytime soon.

I missed that one in the theater as it wasn't here long and I was sick while it was. I was excited for it so that's sad it wasn't great. What stopped it from being great?

I've been wanting to re-watch Roots. Maybe I'll do that this month.

I've had Diary of a Mad Black Woman near the top of my NetFlix queue for at least the last 18 months - I should really let it move up.

It's February.

Last movie I watched that dealt with African American history was The Great Debaters. It wasn't a great movie, but it had some very nice scenes, and some good lines.

"The time is always, always now!" "You should pray that I choose the latter" were terrific lines. Oh, I have chills thinking about them.

I immediately thought of this thread while reading this article, Tyler Perry's Secret to Success
He makes movies for audiences everyone else ignores.

It's incredible that a movie with black actors appealing to black people is such a discovery. Not dissing the article, just the fact that it has to be pointed out.

Yes, it was the #1 movie, too!

I know many people aren't fond of Perry's writing. But one thing is for sure, at least he's doing his part is making movies nobody else is doing.

If this means that someone will take notice and start making more movies with black casts, then what are they waiting for?

This is so true! I'm glad great black actresses can have decent roles in his movies.

I think it's Showtime. Very cool. I'd love to have the channel.

I checked out the link and I agree the last half is very distressing and eye-opening. It literally broke my heart.

Is anyone a fan of Tyler Perry and his movies?

Just saw Dreamgirls, and while I loathe and despise Diana Ross as much as Janet Jackson, I have to say (and to quote someone from back when The Cotton Club was made), "I love seeing all these black people working."

And I love seeing them in hit films (as opposed to the modern day version of black-sploitation films that cater to a certain audience and continue stereotypes). With the recent Academy Award nominations and wins, it's wonderful that being a well-respected black actor isn't such a big deal anymore because it's become more of the norm rather than the exception. Awesome.

I wouldn't worry about sounding preachy - anyone who visits this thread is likely to be fairly sophisticated, film wise. :)

Don't feel guilty.

I wouldn't classify myself as a huge Janet Jackson fan.

I'm looking forward to seeing Sharon and Jill in the movie more than Janet actually.

WildAtHeart - really? Wow, you've now made me extremely curious about your life (not to pry, or anything). I'm bi-racial, too, and it's always bothered me - the light-skinned thing. Even my family says things like, "Well, you're not really black," which I find so incredibly insulting. How sad for them to so misunderstand my own identity issues.

I had a work-study student a few years ago who had the most gorgeous dark skin, but her own friends - politically active African-American college students - wouldn't date her because she was 'too dark.' Uch.

GeneralMaximus - hey you! Good to see you!

Actually, I'm glad I saw this clip since it's drawn me out again, but for a really good issue. It's funny, too, that in my last post before the thread started to die I discussed the up-coming Academy Award nominations for people of color, and look at the award nominees this year! Even more people of color - people of all races - and that's just awesome. I might even watch this year... ;)

DreamWalker - I hope you do, and I hope you post what you think. :)

'Tah for now! I might not be back to post for a while, but I'll be thinking of all of you here.

Also, I don't know if anyone else is aware of this, but the other night I realized one of the premium channels (HBO/Showtime/Starz - I don't recall which one) has a Black version, where they only show films by or with blacks. It's common for Latino-oriented films, and of course there's Channel One and BET, but I think I might subscribe to this service just so I can see some of the films and shows on...

*waves*

i guess i am kind of preachy...and opinionated.....but i've finally come to terms with what i like and don't like.........and i'm not afraid to express it........the good news in film today is that are more oppurtunities and better roles for minorities...whether they be black, latino, latina, young women (and even older women) or gay.....that's the good news...we've come along way in this country to make that happen.....the bad news is that will still have along way to go make it really fair and equitable.....so that a person of color will have the same oppurtunities in film and the roles offered that most white adult male actors take for granted.....
