Black Hawk down - not best pic?

Very good film (apart from the sound system at the cinema being buggered when I saw it and had to listen to it in mono from just one of the speakers 
). Guess it's not luvvy enough for the people who like Moulin what'sits face etc etc
). Guess it's not luvvy enough for the people who like Moulin what'sits face etc etc Hmmm, I thought it was very good, very harrowing, but not the best film of the year. It was, in essence, a two hour gun battle - and while it was a good one, well paced, it really didn't... I dunno... have that certain something.
One thing I'd very much like to know is how closely it matches what actually happened. I'm always immediately suspicious of any American fact/fiction film thing about war now. I did notice that, once again, the only non-American soldiers on the allied side were portrayed as buffoon like characters, getting in the way of the hero Americans... (I think they were pakistani soldiers).
I'm not saying that's not what happened, it MAY be, but I'd like to check before giving the film too high praise.

There was quite a bit of controversy about the way the Somalians were portrayed and that somehow although the US got a bit of a beating they come out of it looking like heros though an American friend of mine who is heavily interested in politics says it is fairly accurate and being that I've not seen the film I couldn't comment on that - I really wanted to see it but circumstances meant I didn't get the chance and now this weekend when I was thinking of going to the cinema I find that checking on Scoot the nearest cinema showing it is in Manchester - looks like I'll have to wait to rent it on DVD!
I really liked Black Hawk Down. Im no expert on the Somalia conflict but I heard that it basically was a complete f**k up by the US and co, and the story of the film seems to confirm that.
I cant believe the amount of Somalians killed in that incident however.. several hundred.. and only twenty US soldiers were killed.. Its a harrowing story, however I really enjoyed the film.

The movie was just a big gun battle.. so why should it win any awarRAB ?
The special effect were hardly ground breaking.. just tons of special effects going off.. beginning & ending were hardly touched on.
