Formic acid, HCO2H, is a weak acid that has a buffer zone between pH 2.7 and pH 4.7. What will happen if we start with 1 M HCO2H at about pH 2 and add 0.1 M NaOH (pH 13) a few milliliters at a time?
a. The pH of the solution instantaneously drops to zero.
b. The pH gradually decreases from pH 2 to zero.
c. The pH steadily increases from pH 2 to pH 13.
d. The pH slowly rises from pH 2 to pH 3, then rapidly rises until about pH 13.
e. The pH rapidly increases until pH 3, slowly rises until about pH 5, then rapidly rises until about pH 12.
