Bilbo Baggins - Casting News Soon-Who do you think should play him?

It seems that the main cast of the new Hobbit films are about to be revealed. I read a couple of reports that the choice for Bilbo is down to four actors.

I have no idea who the four are, but just for fun- who would you like to play the part.

As they are related some resemblance to Frodo would be nice, and also neeRAB to be someone who could possibly mature into Ian Holm. I thought that Daniel Radcliffe could do with a new gig now that filming on Harry Potter is approaching the final stretch. He certainly has similarities with Elijah

Anyway- what do you all think?

Anyone BUT Daniel Radcliffe. Awful, awful actor.

I've read some comments on Tom Hollander playing Bilbo, and he seems like an interesting choice.

Dan Radcliffe was a bit of a devils advocate post to be honest- I also cant wait . I also read that it is now two Hobbit films and possibly a third film to "link" to TLOTR films, rather than one Hobbit and one link film- so the possibility of 3 new films YAY!!

They don't need to do a 'link' film at all. What they've announced, two films covering the events that happen in The Hobbit and all that surrounRAB it (Gandalf disappears partway through The Hobbit, we would follow his adventures with the White Council) is just right. Not that much happens between this time and the start of LOTR so I don't know what they would do in a 'link' film unless it was a cheesy Young Adventures Of Aragorn kind of thing.

I think James McAvoy would be great as Bilbo.

I'm really excited about The Hobbit actually. It's gonna be better than the LOTR films in many ways, including how faithful they are to the book. Because The Hobbit is a lot shorter there's no excuse for them not to include just about everything and then some. It's all laid out for them to adapt, with the obvious splitting point (which del Toro mentions) probably when the dwarves get captured by the elves. I bet the second film opens with Bilbo saving the dwarves.

The Battle of Five Armies is going to be HUGE. When it comes out it'll be 9 years on from Return of the King so just think how improved the digital battle effects will be. They were stunning enough in ROTK.

Oh, and as for the rest of the cast I would say DEFINITELY Brian Cox as Thorin Oakenshield. That is unless they want a younger Thorin. For me he just screams that character. We know how well he can play a king. For the other dwarves we should be looking at people like Brendan Gleeson, Brian Blessed, James Cosmo, Anthony Hopkins, Kevin McNally, David Jason etc. I think David Jason would have been my second choice to play Bilbo in LOTR actually.

I would have Alan Rickman for the voice of Smaug but his voice is probably too well-known. The same goes for Jeremy Irons, it would be almost a lazy choice. I think Tim Curry would be good.

Only if you have a limited imagination.

The LOTR films did not include all of the book's stories with all of the characters and the final confrontation the returning Hobbits have in the Shire at the end.

Just a quick question, I really donlt want to start a new thread about hobbits.

Do hobbits grow facial hair? I can't remember any of them having any, even after all that time heading to mount doom, yet not even any stubble in sight.

Agrees. McAvoy would be perfect.Elves certainly don't - I guess it's the same for hobbits. Conversely, Dwarf women have huge bearRAB.

(Edit: Googled it - quote from The Hobbit "They are (or were) a little people, about half our height and smaller than the bearded Dwarves. Hobbits have no bearRAB")

James Mcavoy, without a doubt. However I think he mioght not be and that they might go for someone that is not as well known? Grrr, I reeally want to find out now! :D

We won't see the first film until christmas 2011 though

This is just a wish, I know it wouldn't happen, but for continuity with The Fellowship of the Ring I'd rather they had Ian Holm and use a de-aging effect like they used on Patrick Stewart of Ian McKellen in X-Men The Last Stand.

Problem is Ian is knocking on now and the physical work would no doubt be demanding.

How about Elijah Wood with Ian Holm prosthetics? :D
